About the Author

Paul Stollard is an architect and chartered fire engineer who has worked in this field for over 30 years. He is a former Director of Abrahams Stollard Ltd, and has been Chief Executive of the Scottish Building Standards Agency and Regional Director for Scotland and Northern England with the Health and Safety Executive. He received the ‘Peter Stone Award’, the highest individual award given annually by the Association of Building Engineers for his work on fire engineering and building standards.

Follows the movie script very closely, if you like the movie you'll like the book

I think I read somewhere that Mr. Key wrote this book at the time of the movie's release to tie the story in better to his 1968 book "Escape to Witch Mountain". Like the movie "Return" is quite a bit different to "Escape" but unlike many movie to book adaptations actually follows the script pretty closely. If you like the movie "Return from Witch Mountain" you'll like the novel.

False advertising

I would not have believed that Amazon would accept such dirty tricks. The book "Return from Witch Mountain" was not written by Alexander Key as advertised. It is based on the Disney movie and characters created by Alexander Key. I was hoping for an original story, not for the retelling of a movie which was not that good to start with. But I was hoping that the book would be better that the film. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

That it was also in deplorable condition, far from being "acceptable" is another point. in the future I will know that what I consider acceptable is not the same as Amazon's term, and I will refrain from buying items that are labeled as such.

Wooden dialogue

I didn't read the previous book, but I'd seen the movie as a kid and found parts of it compelling even though it mostly felt weirdly embarrassing to watch it. (I can't really explain why.) I figured the book would tell me what happened to the kids after the place the movie left off. Mostly I just remember it being a book about Tony getting brainwashed and his sister and others having to save him, and I remember having a hard time picturing them as older than they were in the movie. The explanations for what was going on bothered me and seemed like they didn't quite make sense even though I don't think I knew enough about science at the time to be able to elaborate on why. I remember it being kind of hard to follow and thinking the dialogue was wooden, and so I ended up skimming the second half of the book and not really caring what happened.

Very clear explanation of a very complex subject

This book did just what I had hoped it would do. It took a very complex subject and explained it in as simple terms as possible. I've never had a formal course in biology, but I had watched all the lectures in an MIT Open Courseware course on the subject that had left me confused about a number of things. Of course, this book is not as comprehensive as a full course, but it did clarify a number of things for me. Many of the illustrations are much better than in the textbook that the MIT course was based on. Near the end of the book the author began giving specific study tips -- what things a student needs to be familiar with and what things they need to have down cold. In fact, the last chapter is entitled "Ten Ways to Improve Your Grade." I thought this a little strange, because the introduction does not mention this aspect of the book. It is done unobtrusively, so it shouldn't lessen a non-student's enjoyment of the book. I mention it because it might be a big plus to some prospective readers.

Saving my bu...er...life

I'm taking a graduate level environmental biology class this summer even though I knew I was a bit short on the prerequisites. I didn't try to convince anyone that the prerequisites were unnecessary, just that I was willing to do whatever was necessary to fill in the gaps. Still, it's been 20 years since I was last a student, and 30 since I'd taken a biology class, so I definitely needed help. I bought a copy of Molecular Cell Biology (Lodish, Molecular Cell Biology) to fill in the molecular biology gaps and then I bought this so I could understand Lodish.

So far the combination works quite well. I find that if read this great little book by Dr. Kratz first, I can master a chapter of Lodish in a couple of hours. Without it...well, I'd figure it out but it would take much longer.

Dr. Kratz nicely explains the basic functions of cells and their structures, then devotes a chapter to the chemistry that is especially relevant to cell biology, covalent and ionic bonding, redox reactions, pH and polymers. Subsequent chapters cover carbohydrate, protein, DNA and RNA, and lipid synthesis. Cellular communication, metabolism, respiration, and photosynthesis are nicely briefed. I have not read the remaining chapters yet, but they appear to be equally well prepared.

It certainly will not replace your molecular biology textbook, but if you are feeling a bit behind on the background knowledge you need to be successful, I think this will fill the bill. Altogether, a nicely done book.

I think this book would be great for someone with a non-science background who wanted to understand molecular and cell biology in a simple way. I however bought the book to serve as a quick-read adjunct to college level cell and molecular courses, and the book is totally inadequate for this purpose. The book is far too simplistic and surface oriented to be a study guide to undergraduate cell and molecular biology classes.

David Lewis’s We, the Navigators highlights the rich navigational history of the people of Oceania. A medical doctor and experienced sailor, David Lewis combined meticulous research with personal experimentation to create a unique narrative illustrating the navigational prowess of the Pacific Islanders. Lewis set out to reconstruct the ancient navigational traditions of Oceania and to better understand how these people were able to travel over long distances without the help of western instrumentation and knowledge.
Lewis created a unique book in which he combined personal experience and first-hand accounts with knowledge gained through the study of secondary sources. Lewis recognized that knowledge of the ancient art of seafaring in the Pacific is nearing extinction. He understands the importance of recording and preserving this knowledge for future generations because traditional navigation methods are all but lost. Lewis describes his interviews with surviving navigators who were willing to share their secrets and demonstration them.
The lack of written records in Oceania severely hindered Lewis in his task because he was forced to rely on the oral history that has been passed down for generations. Oral histories are tricky because it is possible that they have been altered or information has been lost over the years. Also, as Lewis points out, certain secrets were held by select individuals or families and as those people passed, so did their knowledge.
Lewis discussed various traditional navigators (Tevake, Bongi, Hipour) that he interviewed and who agreed to demonstrate their techniques. By using the sun, stars, wind, ocean swells, and bird patters these navigators were able to successfully cross the open sea and reach their intended destination. The success of these experiments supported Lewis’ proposed idea that the population of Oceania was not due solely to accidental drift, but rather from intentional navigation.
When discussing the technique of using birds to navigate over long distances, Lewis described the use of different species of birds to provide a specific distance from land. For instance, the noddies indicated that land was within 20 miles, while the boobies had a greater range of 30 miles. Further discussion revealed that certain sub-species of booby could travel farther distances, thus providing the ancient navigator with an abundance of knowledge and information with which to find land.
Lewis provides a unique and compelling narrative that showcases the ancient art of seafaring in the Pacific. He masterfully combines information from his extensive research with information that he has acquired from his own experimental voyages to create a comprehensive work that itself supports the author’s arguments. The passion that Lewis had for this subject is truly reflected on each and every page. It is clear that he sought to preserve the traditions of a people who mastered the sea without the help of western knowledge. Lewis does not simply paint a picture of the pacific for the reader, but rather, he takes them on adventure.

This book is fantastic as an overall introduction to Pacific landfaring/navigation

This book is fantastic as an overall introduction to Pacific landfaring/navigation. As a standalone book I do not think it is good for learning how to use these navigation systems yourself, but if combined with knowledge from the internet and other books, this book provides a lot of vital details which I have never seen published anywhere else.

This book also is unique in the fact that it focuses not on a single system of navigation but the navigation systems of the Polynesians, Carolinians, etc. etc. There are many differences between the systems which is interesting not only from a historical standpoint but a navigational standpoint.

Buy this book, you won't regret it.

Part History, Part textbook, Part Research Paper, All Great Stuff!

A great, fun, interesting, read. Tough to slog through at times because this is NOT an adventure tale but a serious academic research. That means at times in the quest for completeness or thoroughness you feel maybe you are getting bogged down in stuff.... but never for long. Because it is part adventure tale too. The author actually goes out and does these passages between islands with some of the traditional navigators. If this sort of stuff interests you this a wonderful book. Definitely now will be counted among my most treasured on the subject of navigation. Fair warning: You will need to brush up on your geographic knowledge of the pacific islands!
