Mourning Dress: A Costume and Social History
By Jan Odegaard
I've researched Victorian mourning and funeral customs for nearly 20 years and this is the quintessential guide, the best book on the subject I have found (and that was not easy, as it is out of print). Although written and published in England about the customs followed there, it offers the most complete and concise review of the subject that I have ever found. It is a must-have for anyone researching this subject and you will be lucky to get your hands on a copy.
July 2011: This essential guide has finally been reprinted, in 2010, I believe. For anyone interested in the odd, yet thoroughly explainable, rituals that The Victorians went through when a death occurred, this is a must have. They were not "obsessed" with death, it was a part of their every day lives, they expected and prepared for it. It was made openly clear that a death had occurred in a family and this set them apart, allowing them to grieve openly for as long as it took. We, on the other hand, avoid all talk of death and when one occurs we hand everything over to others to deal with, then get right back into our regular routines. While we tell our children in great deal how they came to be, sex was the taboo subject for Victorians and children were told that the stork brought them or they were plucked from a cabbage patch. On the other hand, they knew death in a family would occur, death rates for women & chidren especially were incredibly high but they mourned openly, letting everyone know what had occurred in the household. I think they had the right idea: I was 15 when I attended my first funeral and it was an unpleasant shock I was in no way prepared for and will never forget! It's become our "taboo" subject, while the Victorians embraced it and handled it almost entirely on their own. Thank goodness that by the late 20th Century it became an open topic, and the growth of grief counseling and support systems have blossomed and grown, allowing US to grieve in whatever way we feel feels right to us, and we're allowed to grieve...until.
This is a great book, giving perfectly understandable reasons behind practices that we may find gruesome and morbid. This book makes sense of it all.
