Mark L. Blazey is president of Quantum Performance Group, a management consulting and training firm specializing in organization assessment and high-performance systems development. Dr. Blazey has an extensive background in quality systems. For five years he served as a senior examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He is currently the lead judge for the U.S. Army Communities of Excellence Award and has served as the lead judge for Baldrige-based awards for New York State, Vermont, Delaware, and Aruba, and judge for the Wisconsin Forward Award and the U.S. Department of Labor Workforce Excellence Award. Dr. Blazey has participated on and led numerous site visit teams for national, state, and company-private quality awards and audits over the past 15 years. Dr. Blazey has trained thousands of quality award examiners and judges for state and national quality programs, as well as managers and examiners for schools, health care organizations, major businesses, and government agencies. He has set up numerous Baldrige-based programs to enhance and assess performance excellence for all sectors and types of organizations, many of which have subsequently received state and Baldrige recognition. Dr. Blazey has written many books and articles on quality, including the ASQ Quality Press bestseller Insights to Performance Excellence, and co-authored Insights to Performance Excellence in Education, Insights to Performance Excellence in Health Care, and Baldrige in Brief: A Guide to the Baldrige Performance Excellence Criteria. He is a senior member and Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) of the American Society for Quality.

Beautiful book, some flaws

Great book. Taught me so much about the world of product design without splurging on a degree.

My two issues:
1) The book does a poor job of explaining the materials. As a rookie, it would have been helpful for more simple (less design professional) language, and pictures of each material in use. I had to constantly google search what each material is used for.

2) The book was published in 2011. This industry changes all the time with new tech. Right now all the hype is around 3-d printing, and there's no mention of it. I would love the book with an updated edition.

I initially rented this book from the library and will be getting my own copy to refer back to. Great book, great design, and super helpful towards my product design aspirations. Highly recommend as a newbie.

Save the money on expensive private schools and lofty product design courses. This book teaches everything you need to know. Just practice, practice, practice, and you will eventually succeed.

A useful collection of Kotter's articles

Six of Kotter's articles published between 1979 and 1997 are prefaced by a substantial introduction under the title of Leadership at the Turn of the Century. The six articles are arranged in two groups of three, the first three grouped under Leadership and Change and the second under the heading Dependency and Networks. The first part contains the famous articles "What Leaders Really Do" and "Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail", which was the article behind the author's subsequent book "Leading Change".
I seem to be in a minority in thinking that Kotter's views of leadership are over-rated. Although his commentary recognises complexity, his prescriptions seem to me to be instrumental, linear and unduly inwardly focused. He takes a very analytical view of an intensely human art. One of the central features of successful leadership is passion, and another is a strong and well articulated sense of values. The author recognises both, but does not appear to be engaged by them. They appear to be treated as merely two more ingredients in the mix. Above all, it does not ask the questions that are becoming so dominant - questions about societal values, about balancing the need for profit with issues of sustainability and even about the role of the corporation in a globalised world.
Having said that, there is a lot of good material available. His '8 steps' are sufficiently well known not to need repetition, and the article "What Leaders Really Do" is a good summary of the distinction between leadership and management concerns.
The introduction is written largely around ten 'observations', which add up to saying that leadership and management are different, that high complexity and high rates of change make leadership increasingly important, with a large part of the leadership role being concerned with building vision, providing inspiration and building networks of relationship.

The analytical person's guide to leadership

I look at the other reviewers comments and realize that there's another perspective. One that I think I may share with others who are not the other reviewers.
There's a niche of people out there who are "intuitive / analytical" people. The works of other leadership / management "gurus" seem, well, mystical or overwhelmingly positive.
I personally understand and practice the passion of leadership but personally had a hard time understanding the framework of human relationships and motivations that lead to most management hierarchies. In traditional management hierarchies, passionate people are also labelled as "over the edge". immature, unrealistic.
From an analytical engineering / scientist approach, what occurs in executive management just doesn't seem to make sense. Frankly, I'm blown away by the rampant "peter principle" in executive management. I've not understood why I who have significant leadership skills haven't made it into "the higher echelons".
John Kotter is the first author I've encountered who has been able to layout for me the framework of human interactions. He's the first author who feels to me like he is looking over my shoulder giving me useful guidance, not just pumping me up.
The article on "Leading Change, Why Transformation Efforts Fail" included in the book landed in my lap at a time when I'm attempting to lead cultural changes.
The chapter on "Managing and Power" helped me understand how my independent / contra-dependent leanings might actually be hindering me in a management hierarchy of over dependent managers.
I've gotten more condensed information from Kotter than from any other source to date. However, in this case, I must concur with one of the other reviewers: I'd like greater depth of information on how to better adapt.
Still, Kotter's terse, analytical perspective has been phenomenally valuable in giving me insights into my behaviors (that I'm not the only person who acts, feels, or believes in the things that I do) and a framework for understanding the behaviors of others.
Only time will tell if I've been able to take away anything of any real value and apply it successfully.

The Differencing Between Leading and Managing

In a long working career I have observed numerous instances of the high management manage companies with very few examples of them leading the company somewhere. I worked for Univac for instance, saw them merge with Burroughs, and watched as they turned two five billion dollar companies into one six billion dollar (with a loss in 2006 of almost $300 million). I watched Digital Equipment completely misunderstand the impact of the PC and go from a major player to be part of Compaq, then part of HP.

While this was happening, Microsoft and Intel were truly exercising the leadership that took the computer world through what Andy Grove (of Intel) called an inflection point.

This book is a collection of six essays. The first three discuss leadership. The second three discuss the management aspect. It's a quick easy read, and while there is little practical 'do it this way' advice, the overall impact is just what a true leader needs.

The Profound Legacy of the Late David Flynn

I had never heard of this Christian genius until one of my favorite authors and Bible teachers, Dr. Thomas Horn highly recommended his monumental work that he was privileged to publish subsequent to David Flynn's untimely death. On Dr. Horn's website he has made this compilation available... and to my astonished awe I can only say that my world has changed due to the clear and comprehensive revelation into ancient and deep mysteries that the Holy Spirit of GOD had given to this humble servant of the Most High.

The 515 page volume is written in a highly readable yet quite challenging manner, with each of the 37 total chapters in both books footnoted at the end of each chapter with reference resources listed. There are extensive photos, diagrams, maps, historical artwork, and even formulas that demonstrate the depth of his brilliant scholarship and profound insight.

He is in the Presence of ABBA Father, who clearly welcomed him -at such a young age with "Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your LORD."

I have done a more thorough review of both books- Temple at the Center of Time, & Cydonia: The Secret Chronicles of Mars on my personal Weblog at zionsgate (wordpress) with images, video links, and worship music. As deep as this volume is, I have already felt compelled to start at the beginning again, and more carefully dig into this present truth teaching with focus on the comprehensive footnote sources. You will share in the exhilaration of discovery and be humbled in the greater Scriptural illumination it provides as you prayerfully study this incredible legacy of our dear brother in Christ, David Flynn.

All Christians should read this!

I ordered the hard copy of this collection online, but not wanting to wait on shipping I also purchased the Kindle edition (Thanks Amazon). At first I found Mr.Flynn's writings a bit hard to understand. This work shows how remarkable his thinking abilities are. But after skipping through a few chapters in the first book of this collection and eventually all-the-way through to the second book (Cydonia: the Secret Chronicles of Mars) I began to get a better understanding of how he writes and his skills on interpretation. If you find yourself a little perplexed with all the very extended detailed sources he quotes in the beginning of his books, I'd suggest skipping to the last few chapters and then backing up and re-reading from the start. This helped me to stay on track and get a better understanding of his knowledge. His books are not a hard read, don't get me wrong. I'm not a college grad nor someone with a remarkable IQ so I do sometimes struggle with complicated writings especially on ancient pagan gods and Roman/Greek/Babylonian paganism. There are so many mythological beings written about in history it's easy (for me) to get them mixed up and become confused as to whom is who or what). Once I skipped through to the last few chapters and got a better understanding as to what all this research was leading to then the whole book became clear. Mr.Flynn surely has a gift of understanding. He sees and depicts things from ancient writings and glyph's that no one to my knowledge could match. Over the past few years I've spent hundreds of dollars on books, manuscripts, DVD's and many other resources trying to acquire a better understanding of all these supernatural and esoteric events and doctrines. I've long since had an overwhelming interest in aliens/grays, and what is really going on in the secret societies. After all, why so much hard work on their part seeing that I/we (Christians) know they loose! I've always figured if they were intelligent enough to be illuminated then surly they'd be smart enough to read and comprehend the Holy Bible and thus see that Satan and his followers loose badly. But the "strong delusion" quoted from the Holy Writ also comes to mind. PRAISE be to GOD ALMIGHTY for HIS Ways are so much Higher! I'm not finished reading the first book in this collection so I won't comment on it yet but I still highly recommend both books to anyone who would like to know more about such things and I truly doubt you will find it anywhere else that is so well researched and illustrated. I only wished I'd found these years ago I could have saved a lot of money and in some cases what I feel was wasted time. I know I will be reading and studying both books repeatedly. I would also recommend watching the lectures he made concerning the information in his books. As an end-note I would like to mention how heart felt I am to his family and loved ones at his passing this year. And a very big thank you to those who compiled the collection and posted it for sale. I doubt, without this effort,I would have ever come to know these outstanding works and how beneficial to the public they truly are.

Great read! I ordered both Kindle and paperback

This is a great read. Intellectually stimulating - and it appears to be well researched. If this is food for thought, your brain may put on some weight. Both books in THE DAVID FLYNN COLLECTION (TEMPLE AT THE CENTER OF TIME, and CYDONIA: THE SECRET CHRONICLES OF MARS) potentially fill in a lot of what the Bible leaves out. Revealing concerning the mystery schools...

I have wanted to read CYDONIA: TSCOM for some time, but couldn't justify $75 for a 260 page book. It's unfortunate that it apparently took David Flynn's death for it to become affordable ($9.95 for Kindle). But David is OK with that as he is with the Lord now. Read the Kindle version on a 15.6" portable PC. I have not been satisfied with the Kindle software for PC. I am not always hooked up to Internet - Amazon Kindle led me to believe they were retaining corrections (for another book not David's). They lost about 40 of them - that was the end of that dance. I eventually ordered this book in paperback; it is excellent.

Je me suis plong� pendant plusieurs mois dans les forums de bourse, les livres sur les actions et portefeuilles, pour essayer de me lancer dans l’aventure de fa�on plus s�rieuse.
� l’�poque (il y a un si�cle, � l’�chelle de l’�volution des march�s), les syst�mes de courtage par internet �taient tr�s rudimentaires, ou n’�taient pas tr�s attrayants. La qualit� des logiciels d’affichage des graphiques n’avait rien � voir, et peu d’indicateurs �taient disponibles. Cela m’a oblig� � penser de mani�re simple, en �tudiant le prix avant toute chose.
J’ai multipli� les exp�riences : strat�gies bas�es sur l’�tude de l’�conomie, ou au contraire purement techniques, j’ai d�velopp� des logiciels de trading automatis�s, et j’ai commenc� � tirer des r�sultats statistiques, des grandes g�n�ralit�s…
Et puis j’ai eu l’occasion de travailler � l’informatique, pour une soci�t� de courtage pendant 2 ans. J’�tais tr�s proche des traders.
L� j’ai d�couvert beaucoup de choses. Je comparais les ordres pass�s par les traders � ceux que je passais, ou que j’aurais pass�s, sur les m�mes valeurs. Je me suis rendu compte qu’il n’y avait pas besoin d’�tre un g�nie ou d’avoir fait 10 ans d’�tudes pour faire leur travail. Et ils gagnaient, beaucoup, beaucoup d’argent…
� cette �poque, il �tait relativement ais� d’obtenir des r�sultats corrects en achetant et gardant des actions longtemps, jusqu’� ce qu’elles aient g�n�r� une plus-value suffisante, puis de les vendre et recommencer. Apr�s la crise, beaucoup de ces anciens coll�gues qui se prenaient pour des g�nies ont d�chant�…et ont �t� licenci�s en masse. J’ai pu constater de mes yeux les grandes tabl�es open space, ou il ne restait que 3 traders l� o� il y en avait eu 25…

Ce qui m’a choqu�, c’est de constater � quel point ils avaient pu perdre de l’argent, l� o� moi j’avais continu� d’en gagner.
C’est � ce moment, fin 2008 que j’ai d�cid� de � virer mon patron � et me lancer comme trader ind�pendant.

Depuis, je gagne ma vie en travaillant 3 heures par jour : 1 heure chaque matin, midi, et soir. En fonction de mes envies et du contexte de march�.
Quand je suis en vacances ou � l’�tranger, pas de probl�me, un simple pc portable avec une connexion internet me suffit pour surveiller mon portefeuille. Chaque trimestre je transf�re sur mon compte bancaire 50% des gains des 3 derniers mois.
J’ai le temps pour me consacrer � d’autres activit�s personnelles ou professionnelles, notamment l'�criture de ce livre qui est un projet qui me tenait � cœur.

Il est possible d’investir en bourse en restant soi-m�me, et sans bac+48 en maths. Les financiers veulent vous faire croire le contraire, car ils ne souhaitent pas partager. Ce n’est pas mon avis. Je suis comme vous, ils sont comme nous, tout le monde peut y arriver. Je compte bien le prouver avec ce livre.
