About the Author
Gene Luen Yang is the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature and is a MacArthur Fellow, a recipient of what's popularly known as the MacArthur "Genius" Grant. He began drawing comic books in the fifth grade, and in 1997 he received a Xeric Grant for his first comic, Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks. He has since written and drawn a number of titles, including Duncan’s Kingdom, The Rosary Comic Book, Prime Baby and Animal Crackers. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. He also won an Eisner for The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim. He is the author of the Secret Coders series (with artist Mike Holmes) and has written for the hit comics Avatar: The Last Airbender and Superman. Yang lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Mike Holmes has drawn for the comics series Secret Coders, Bravest Warriors, Adventure Time, and the viral art project Mikenesses. His books include the True Story collection (2011), This American Drive (2009), and Shenanigans. He lives with a cat named Ella, who is his best buddy.

Daughter liked it!

My 7 year old daughter liked decoding the blinking birds. I sent it with her when she went with a weekend trip with her mother and she read the whole thing long before she got to her destination. If it encourages my daughter to read AND think about math, its a win-win in my book!

I will never understand why adults insist on putting things like this in books and in TV shows and movies

As a Sr . Software developer I purchased this book after reading the reviews hoping it would be something I could read to my girls and teach them about programming. While the book does a decent job on teaching binary, solving some problems and basic programming the story was not, in my opinion, child friendly at all. The opening scene with the girl arguing with her mother, and then getting into a fight and spitting on another child was enough to make me not read this to my children. I will never understand why adults insist on putting things like this in books and in TV shows and movies. They think they are connecting with the children because that kind of stuff happens in life, but what adults fail to understand is that WE are the ones that teach those things. The kids read it in books, see it on TV and learn it and think that's how they should act and it's wrong. This book would have been decent enough if the author had left out the fighting, spiting and other emotional drama that ultimately did nothing to drive the story forward and everything to turn me off from sharing this with my children.

Get with the Program!

So glad to have pre-ordered this and received today. I don't usually read books I order for my daughter before she does, but I am home sick so I figure, what the hey?
This being aimed for the late grade school, middle school crowd, I am not surprised that the earlier part of the story involves new schools, bullying and fitting in. That is what any normal story would do, but Secret Coders gets extremely un-normal in a hurry and in a good way. Without spoiling, I can say that there are surprises at every turn, seamless integration of computing principles, reflective arcs that make you go "ah-ha!", and yes, even puzzles built into the comic.
No to be left out are familiar themes that Gene's work is known for. Deeper themes of family and self worth done tastefully and without insult. As a fan of his stuff, I can honestly say that this is one of my favorites; and I would recommend to any parent or teacher to pick this up right away.
