COLLECTION OF GREAT EXPLORERS OF THE AMAZON

The Amazon has always been a source of dreams and threats to European explorers. In this volume, Anthony Smith selects a few explorers and adventurers who have sougth fame, honor, fortune or knowledge in the banks of the Amazon. The selection is a bit random with some characters, but overall provides a very interesting and readable collection of great men and women.

Devoting about 30-40 pages per explorer, the book covers the following:

1) Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil. He was never to the Amazon, so it is a bit unclear what he is doing in this volume.

2) Orellana, the first Spaniard down the Amazon, the first man to report seeing the Amazon women.

3) Aguirre, the madman who went down the Amazon in a murderous rage only to turn back and try to conquer Peru again.

4) Teixeira, the man who asserted Portuguese possession of the Amazon, sailing against the current up the Amazon.

5) Condamine, the first scientist down the Amazon.

6) The Godin's, one fo the greatest love stories in the world, where a woman, separated for 30yrs from her husband, goes down the Amazon to meet him.

7) Humboldt, the last renaissance man, does most of his scientific discoveries in the northern Amazon, including the famous Casiquiare canal.

8) Spruce and Wickham, two botanists and robbers of some of the wealth of the Amazon - cinchona and rubber trees.

9) Arana, the great and evil character of the Putumayo, where some of the greatest atrocities of the rubber boom were committed against indians.

These stories are well told, though some important characters are not listed -- Wallace and Bates, for example. Highly recommended though, as a door to finding out more about this great region and its history.

A fascinating romp across South America

I have read and re-read this wonderful account of the history of Amazonian exploration since the hardcover edition first came out in 1990. Anthony Smith, an inveterate science writer, writes with warmth and humor as he describes the very first European travels down this mighty waterway, those of the Spaniards Don Francisco de Orellana and the notorious Lope de Aguirre (the subject of Werner Herzog's 1972 movie "Aguirre, Wrath of God") and the Portugese navigator Pedro Teixeira. Next came the scientists, including la Condamine and von Humboldt followed in the latter nineteenth century by a bevy of entrepeneurs who expropriated rubber and other commodities from the rainforest. A well-written book on a fascinating subject!

An unscholarly but entertaining read:

This book is an easy read for those who don't have the time or inclination to pursue this subject further. No source material is given for any of the chapters. It seems to be plagarized from a number of other works on this subject. I'm not familiar with this writer and wonder if he's primarily a writer of fiction. Anyway, he covers in an entertaining way most of the well known Amazonian explorers but leaves out true greats such as Henry Walter Bates, who only gets a passing reference,and Candido Rondon and Richard Evans Schultes, both of whom are not even mentioned. But he includes Julio Arana, for who, as far as I am concerned, cannot even be classified as an explorer. I Called Her Last!

Sometimes we indulge in a self-defeating game with a friend, called, "I called last." You can even hear a whining little note in the claim. Of course, you really believe that you've been doing all the work of keeping your relationship alive. After all, you send the cards every holiday and birthday; what more can be expected? When weeks go by and you haven't heard from your friend, you begin to sulk inside. You miss her, or feel lonely and make the first call.

When you're together, it's great. Your friend really seems to value and enjoy your company. But when you're apart, it's the old cliche, "Out of sight, out of mind." As the time gap increases, so does the emotional gap. You feel hurt, devalued and disregarded.

"I called her last," you say petulantly. "If she really cared, she'd call." Cobwebs gather on your phone.

At this point, you have to make a decision about keeping the friendship alive by calling or writing, or not reaching out as a matter of principal. You need to decide which is more important, the friendship or to be right. It can be tough to swallow your pride, but if you care about keeping your friendship alive, you'll call. Just imagine how you'd feel if you steadfastly refused to call and then heard your friend had moved away, or worse, had died unexpectedly.

When you have decided to make contact, the phone call or note should begin like this: "I was thinking of you and reflecting about how much I care for and miss you." The note or conversation must not begin with recriminations, just kindness.

If you are a teacher, this is a wonderful idea to share with your students. Bring a pile of stamped envelopes to class. Give them out to your students and actually have them write a heart-felt letter to a friend they've lost touch with. Folks generally come back to class excited about the results.

Networking with people you've had a personal growth experience with can be initiated by doing a one-minute love call. Actually set a timer and call the person, stating, "This is a one-minute love call to let you know I'm thinking of you and appreciate you for ______________." At the end of the minute, thank them, bid them farewell and hang up. Watch, they�ll come back soon!

Interesting and enlightening

This was the first time I'd heard about the Three Principles, and I feel like the author presented these concepts in an understandable, relateable way. Reading through this book a few times has given me a new perspective on the way I think and how much attention I give my thoughts. Definitely worth reading.

Italian Fun!

My husband and I take Italian classes and this is an excellent supplemental aid for practice in writing and learning grammar pretty painlessly. Italian has lots of quirky rules (So does English!) that are difficult for English speakers but this book helps immensely. Learning by writing is the next best method, the best being conversation and this book does a great job. Our Italian teacher is impressed with our progress and we haven't divulged our secret: The Italian materials we've purchased from Amazon. We are ready for our next trip to Italy.

This is a good book for reviewing Italian. I like the exercises and I use it to enhance my learning. If you would like to learn Italian, it is worth buying. I have all of the books in this series because what I do not learn in class, I learn in these books.

In 2010 I was trying to decide what to do next, so I started reading a few books that I had wanted to get to but never had the chance. Being in transition between jobs, I went to Amazon.com and ordered: The Letters of Thomas Jefferson, Fredrick Douglass, Hutchinson, Rousseau, and a few others. I then came across Leviathan by Thomas Hobbs. Of course I was also thinking of what language to choose to learn. I had studied in the past: English of course, Spanish, Nihongo, the language of the Japanese, French (growing up in Southeast Texas / Louisiana area, Arabic after spending two years in The Middle East, Latin of course, and around 2001, I had made an attempt at Italian.
Then while reading Leviathan, in it was the suggestion of Italian being one of the better languages to learn because of its’ great literary past; having stopped us from slipping into the dark ages; The Renaissance and The Enlightenment being the two noted for such an event in aiding human civilization in the right direction. I then started my research and was lucky enough to come across a book by Paola Nanni-Tate. I have read about half a dozen of hers (that alone would just about tell you that she is an expert in the field of the Italian language).
At that point I said that I would give it a year to see if I enjoyed it and would I continue, making it a life-long project (I’m also a writer . . .). That of course was five and a half years ago.
Being a writer and trying to make an honest attempt at writing a poem, a letter, having a written conversation or writing a book for others to read, I felt that I would have to get it as close to flawless as possible. After deciding that I would continue, by this time I could discern between the best methodologies to choose in learning the language. Paola Nanni-Tate’s books stood out at the top because of its’ ‘step by step’ approach. More than just conversational learning, but teaching and giving one the ability (for those in which they feel it is necessary) to be articulate at the language.
I have read what I’m certain are some of the best books on the subject, and few have matched that level (less than a hand full). Deciding the proper usage of the incredibly diverse list of prepositions: the many uses of da, di and a, etc. How and when to use ci, and the proper usage of possessive adjectives.
For those who plan on writing as well as speaking the language while traveling, you can tell that this is only part of what it takes to really indulge in / learn the language and that it is the best approach.
