About the Author
Joseph R. Boyle is a former elementary special education teacher. In his special education classroom and other settings, he taught students with mild to moderate disabilities. These students included students with learning disabilities, mild to moderate cognitive disorders, traumatic brain injury, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, and Asperger's syndrome. As a special education teacher, he has collaborated and co-taught with general education teachers and other school professionals. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in Special Education. Through research at various universities, he has developed a number of classroom interventions for students with mild disabilities in the areas of reading and note-taking. Joseph R. Boyle is currently an associate professor of special education at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. He has taught or currently teaches courses for university students in undergraduate to doctoral programs. Among the courses that he taught at Rutgers and at other universities include: methods and materials for special education, collaboration and consultation, introduction to special education and special education law, assessment in special education, special education behavioral management, language disabilities, critical issues in special education, and technology in special education classrooms. He has also taught several courses online and in other web-based formats. His current research interests include examining the effectiveness of teaching techniques among students with mild disabilities, particularly in the areas of reading and note-taking. He has co-authored three special education casebooks and numerous journal articles.

David Scanlon is a former high school and community college special education teacher. In his high school resource room he taught students with a variety of disabilities, some were mainstreamed and others took most or all of their academic courses with him. In the community college he taught basic literacy courses and assisted with advising for students with disabilities. He received his Ph.D. in Special Education and Rehabilitation from the University of Arizona. Following his graduation he worked as an assistant research scientist at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. There, he and his colleagues developed strategic interventions appropriate to the inclusive content-area classroom context. While at the CRL, David served as director of intervention research for the National Adult Literacy and Learning Disabilities Center. The Center was funded to identify best curricular practices in adult basic education. David Scanlon is currently an associate professor of special education in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. He teaches courses for students ranging from undergraduate to doctoral students. Among the courses he teaches are an introductory special education class, special education methods for regular education teachers, methods for special education teachers of students with mild disabilities, and investigations into scientific and social theories on the nature of learning disabilities and special education practice. He continues to research effective interventions for children and adolescents with mild disabilities, including focuses on content-area literacy and transition. He has co-authored several learning strategies, in addition to curricular materials and nearly fifty research publications and book chapters.

The history of pi, says the author, though a small part of the history of mathematics, is nevertheless a mirror of the history of man. Petr Beckmann holds up this mirror, giving the background of the times when pi made progress and also when it did not, because science was being stifled by militarism or religious fanaticism. The mathematical level of this book is flexible, and there is plenty for readers of all ages and interests.

About the Author

Petr Beckmann was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1924. Until 1963, he worked as a research scientist for the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, when he was invited as a Visiting Professor to the University of Colorado, where he decided to stay permanently as professor of electrical engineering. He has authored eleven books and more than fifty scientific papers, mostly on probability theory and electromagnetic wave propagation.

A Nice Insightful Book on Mathematics

One of the reviewers complained about this book's continuous digressions. Well, you must know before reading this book that mathematicians were never great historians. Dr Beckmann is a professor of Electrical Engineering and this is more in the Physics side. This makes him potentially worse of a historian. But then would you please stop for a second and tell me what you want to know in a book about "Pi!"
I know I want to know almost anything there is about it. I want to know its origin, how people dealt with it in ancient days, and how people are dealing with it nowadays or in the past 100 year. Do not be mystified, for this number was known long long ago.
Then what is wrong with digressions? We want to know as much as possible, don't we? I saw that Dr Beckmann insights were all interesting. You would say, "Oh, yeah, another one of those geeky mathematicians." But I would only answer that I hate computers but read the section about applying the computer in computing new digits of this strange number.
This number appears in so many places in mathematics. The most famous is in the formula relating the circumference of the circle to the radius. And it appears in so many other sciences. It was the passion of so many amateur mathematicians to compete in the memorization of as many as a million digits after the decimal point.
Do you see why I decided to read the book? It is worth your time. Read it you too.

A readable history of pi for high school algebra students...

The math in this book will not intimidate the reader, and the general audience with a high school algebra or geometry course can find something interesting in almost all portions of the book. (It was here that I learned that pi is not simply "irrational," it is also "transcendental"--that is, not capable of being a root of any algebraic formula.) The time format runs from 2000 BC to 1970s AD, when computers could be developed and used in order to compute values of pi. My little PC can compute 3000 digits of pi in less than a second, using Mathematica.

I had only one reservation about the book, which is the author's abhorence of organized religions. He states several times that Christianity held science and math back through the post Roman Empire era until the Englightenment ages. He is harshest on Christianity, but he also reserves a few hard barbs for the Persian and Muslim leaders. I thought that the author's heartfelt views on religion distracted the reader from his mathematical insights about Pi.

Amazon also sells a competing book, Alfred S. Posamentier and Ingmar Lehmann, Pi: A biography of the world's most mysterious number (Prometheus Books, 2004). That book has more "real" math in it, and less about the role of organized religion.

These changes in governance resulted in, among other things, the prolific growth of NGOs in the country, particularly in Karnataka. Explaining how community-based organizations (CBOs) set up by these NGOs have made their way into rural Karnataka, this book expresses concern over how they now perform functions that rightly belong to PRIs following the 73rd Amendment to the Constitution which devolves 29 functions to local self-government, passing on the funds they receive from the centre to their district and village branches, though these should actually go to PRIs.

The book argues that elected representatives have been put in place by the people at all levels, and it is they who should take decisions regarding the development of this country. In the post-liberalisation period, governance through institutions that eschew political decentralisation is fraught with hazards. Not only will avenues for the expression of people’s wishes be lacking in such a scenario, but there will also be increasing inequality, resulting in a skewed development. The inclusiveness which the present government seeks will elude them unless they restore and strengthen Panchayat Raj institutions.

LOVE IT!

I NEVER WRITE REVIEWS, BUT THIS ONE WAS WORTH IT! This is a GREAT book for people wanted to jump head first into C#. I'm the type of person that never reads a technical book from cover to cover... I read enough to understand what I'm doing and then use the book as a reference. This is the perfect book for that! It gives you just the right amount of knowledge to start working with C# and tons of samples that actually work! I loved it so much I bought two copies -- one for home and one for the office.

Excellent, worth for those who want to learn

This book is packed with knowledge. Every page is worth its weight in gold. I read it from cover to cover. Re-doing EVERY exercise manually. Trust me, I know what I'm saying.
I worked with the 1st Edition. Took me 8 months to finish the book thorougly. Yes there is some mistakes and typos. But if you understand the text, you can correct these mistakes easily. As a reward, the exercises I redo is always better than the book's ones.
Some persons complaint that there's too much authors resulting in style discrepancy and the chapters slightly overlap their introduction. Yes it's true. And I found that it's rather a GREAT advantage. Just because each author gives you the best of their expertise. Do you think an author of ASP.NET could give you detailed explanation all the intricacies of the C# & .NET runtime environment?
The repetition of some concepts is not really a waste, this book is advanced. I found that it's rather good. Actually, I found this book doesn't have enough pages. Sometime I can't do better than 3 pages a day.
The chapters related to the .NET and C# language fundamental (Chapter 1 to 10) and advanced techniques (File IO, ASDI, COM+, GDI+, .NET Remoting, Windows Services and Security) are simply wonderful. They represent +80% of the book. I rated the ADO.NET and XML chapters 4 stars. The weakest part is ASP.NET, Web Services. I wish the author had choosen a simpler example and add may be few more chapters. The chapter on Custom Control is OK. In anyway, I can't blame the author, to get serious on ASP.NET, you'd rather buy a specific book.
I particularly like the side notes and the Appendix giving a background comparison C# and traditional languages (C++, Java, VB).
If you expect from this book a collection of recipes of code ready for cut and paste, then you will be likely disappointed. This book is for those who are willing to LEARN. The C# language and OOP concept itself is not that difficult. It's rather the .NET Framework itself and how to use wisely the wealth of its base classes.
One reviewer said "too many authors who don't know their stuff". Not true, while I was redoing the exercise, I perceived the style of each of them. Generally they're good. And when needed, the authors answer to my emails. I'm an experienced programmer, when something is bad, I can see it easily.
I come from a VB + ASP background, thanks to this book, I now have a pretty solid knowledge of .NET and a pure style C# programmer. I have had hard time to grasp the whole stuff but now I can tell you that I'm happy to leave the VB world.
I wholeheartly recommend this book to anyone who want to learn C# _AND_ how to make useful application with it. Be courageous, spend some time, you won't be disappointed.

An excellent book in my opinion

I am enjoying this book so much that I thought I'd write a review about how I felt about this book. The second edition of Professional C# is really an excellent piece of work. The authors have done a real good job covering a wide range of topics. Not only did I get to learn the basics of the C# language, but the book took me well into the depths of the .NET framework class library. The book starts with a thorough explanation on what the .NET framework and the CLR is all about and where C# as a language fits in. The C# language is introduced in 3 detailed chapters - The basics of the language, Object oriented features in the language, and advanced topics on C#. These chapters had some really nice examples and gave me a strong foundation in understanding the constructs of the language. This is followed by an introduction to the core classes in the framework and how to put them to use. From then on, there are 18 more great chapters covering the framework class library in detail right from writing Windows Forms Applications, Data access with ADO.NET, Controls and Data binding, how to work with the XML classes in the framework, ASP.NET, COM(+) interoperability techniques, GDI+, Web Services, Remoting, Security, Windows services, ADSI etc., You name it and there's probably a topic on the subject covered in sufficient detail to get you up and running. It's hard to pack such exhaustive content all into one book, but they've done a great job at that. Overall, I am very happy with the book and it's well worth the money I spent for this 1220 page tome.

A distasteful hero and rampant comma misuse

The Duke's Reform started out with what I assumed would be a typically formulaic historical romance. In the prologue, Alex, the widowed and heartbroken Duke of Rochester, vows that he will not marry again for love. He will marry to secure an heir, but by God, he absolutely will not fall in love. He runs into (literally) Isobel a few pages later. She's predictably feisty and mouthy, and they immediately feel sexual attraction as they verbally spar. Here we go, I thought. They will push and pull for 75% of the book, she will break down his walls, he will awaken her sexually, they will fall madly in love, they will be separated by some misunderstanding, and they will reconcile. The end. In hindsight, this might have been a better book.

Instead, the pair quickly marry after a brief courtship. When Isobel is not instantly impregnated, Alex turns to gambling and alcohol, and Isobel feels increasingly lonely.

On two separate occasions, his low-life friends attempt to sexually assault Isobel, and she fights back. Both times, Alex viciously accuses Isobel of tainting his good family name because she physically defended herself. After the second attempted assault, Alex tells Isobel, "Tonight, madam, you brought disgrace to my name...I am master in this house and it's high time you learnt what happens when you disobey me." He calls her a common trollop and locks her alone in a freezing room. When he finally releases her, she punches him. Alex then drags his wife to their bed and prepares to rape her, but of course, Isobel quickly succumbs to his "charms". She understandably flees the next day, and like magic, Alex instantly repents and becomes a changed man.

It seems like the author could not decide what to do with Isobel. Her initial spunk was replaced almost immediately by a simpering subservience and then continued to vacillate without reason. The Duke, meanwhile, is not exactly a sympathetic character.

I can appreciate the author's attempts to mix up the typical formula. But I cannot appreciate the constant misuse of commas. I had to continually pause and double back to attempt to discern the author's meaning, making an already slow read even slower. I was also put off by the awkwardness of the writing. I think the author went to great lengths to avoid anachronisms. While that's commendable, in this case, conversations just sounded silly. For instance, when Alex cuts himself on a wine glass, he tells Isobel, "I don't wish to mar the perfection of your outfit with my gore." She replies, "I should not care if you did. However, as I've no idea where your bandages are kept, I shall do as you ask."

I don't enjoy writing negative book reviews, but a distasteful lead male character and constant grammatical errors make this book impossible to recommend.

God's teeth! How do I begin this review? Let's see . . .this book is about the poor Duke of Rochester, our hero Alexander. He lost his first wife and two daughters due to illness, and after much urging is on the hunt for another bride so he can get that all important heir. He's let himself fall into a pit of depression while blowing money on gambling and drinking. Alexander hangs out with some unsavory characters as well. However, a chance meeting with our heroine Isobel changes his life. They meet at a ball afterward, court quickly and marry at record speed. Not much courtship is shown, and I didn't really feel a connection initially.

Begging your pardon, but in the first few chapters of the book Alexander is often shown to be cold and uncaring. He becomes distant and acts disappointed when Isobel fails to conceive within the first few months of marriage. Isobel is shown to be a mousy individual without much backbone to speak up. One night Alexander is drunk and punishes Isobel for "ruining his name" at a party. I beg your pardon, but Isobel runs away the next day. This causes Alexander to reflect on his life to make changes. God's teeth! He promises to be a different man if he can just get his love back! He doesn't even blame her for running away, and he even takes all the blame for Isobel not getting pregnant upon himself as well.

After being in hiding for a while Isobel discovers she is pregnant after leaving Alexander. God's teeth! She decides to go back to the home they shared. Alexander is gone, and this gives Isobel time to establish a small army of servants who are loyal to her as she sets up house in the east wing of the home. Alexander accidentally discovers she is back and spends the rest of the book groveling in one form or another trying to win Isobel's love once again.

This is when the book sort of changes gears and starts veering into a mystery. God's teeth! There are a few villains causing trouble for the couple; murder, mayhem and distrust abound at this point. Isobel falls in and out of love with Alexander a half dozen times due to perceived slights. Alexander's personality is completely transformed, and he sort of becomes a wimp as he bows to each and every demand Isobel makes. God's teeth! It was really starting to get irritating.

Begging your pardon, but there is the happily ever after at the end of this book because that is the typical outcome of most romances. I don't begrudge the ending at all. However, I have to say, you could really get involved in a serious drinking game with the writing in this book. The two phrases I used as my review title are repeated over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. You get my drift right? I'm sure if I had bothered taking a shot for each time one of those phrases was used I would have been well wasted by the end. Even the author must have realized how ridiculous it was becoming because she had Isobel making fun of "I beg your pardon" once in the book.

I do beg your pardon, but God's teeth I couldn't bear to read this story again. I'm afraid it will be removed from my Kindle as it is not a keeper.

The Duke's Reform - Kindle version - where was the editor?

Spoiler alert: I hate to write a bad review so I will start out with the good. This was a good story. Could have been a much better story. It was poorly told, punctuation and vocabulary and missing words and words added in that did not relate to the sentence they were in combined to make this a very difficult read. When I read a story, I want to read what the author wanted to tell, I don't want to have to guess and fill in the story every other page.

There was a lot of room for emotions in this story but not much of it was developed. The Duke who was very nice at first, then became a jerk and then miraculously woke up and became a groveling good guy was actually my favorite character.

The h just wore me out with moving here and there, having clothes moved back and forth, changing her mind, she's in love, she's in lust, she's in hate. It got to the point where it was just tedious. Maybe she hurt herself jumping to conclusions about the Duke.

The Duke really was a big jerk during part of the book and the h was whiny. Okay, she was young and not very experienced but she went from being a simpering whiner to being an unhappy shrew. That transformation can happen but why? I would have liked to see her emotions and actually see her grow.

The sex scenes were very mild and pretty bland. Nothing hot here ladies.

The voices of the characters never really rang true. Some parts of the story did not go anywhere. For instance, after the baby is born, h takes her first horseback ride. Lots of anticipation and build up for this and sure enough, the high strung horse bolts. That's the end of that part of the story. Seriously, it is never mentioned again. Horse bolts and presumably she falls off. We never hear anymore about it.

One of the bad guys is just abandoned at the end of the story. We never find out if he was caught or if he lived happily ever after as a bad guy.

The story ended very abruptly. There was an implied HEA. But once again, the reader is left out.

This could have been a good read if only they had had an editor. The Kindle version has some serious formatting problems with new paragraphs beginning in the middle of sentences, some paragraphs in bold and other in italics for no apparent reason. Commas and other punctuation are just, willy nilly throughout the book. A stilted and unbelievable dialogue. I wanted to like both the H and the h. I really did.

I am left wondering why I read this book to the end except that, I really wanted to like the H and h and I wanted them to have an HEA.

But if you must, get a dictionary and keep it handy, you will need it. This is a long read and by the end I just wanted it to be over.
