Index Annuities Read
By Matthew Haussmann
I personally work in banking. However, index annuities are complex and even for me a little confusion. I needed an easy to read breakdown of how they work and also a source that showed both the positive and possibly negative side to them. What I really liked about the book starts on page 53 and it talks about "Behind the Curtain - The Insider View on Fixed Annuities". It's this type of additional info I really wanted to know that not many places will share with you.

It is an excellent source of information on annunities.
By Elliott D.
Annuities are a form of investment for retirement and can also be part of the systematic portfolio for the long term investor. Mr. Lucas skillfully explains the pros and cons of this type of investment in his book. He admits this is a very complicated, involved and intricate investment which warrants a professional well versed in the field to explain. On page 71 in his book he writes, "The devil is in the details you have learned in reading this book". The thirty years of experience Mr. Lucas has in the field is exhibited in his book. The fact that it is written in large letters is a plus for the reader to read and understand. He methodically explains the different types of annuities, the benefits and pitfalls of each and what to look out for in purchasing this product. It is an excellent source of information for any investor thinking of purchasing an annuity.

Great read for anybody interested in investing in Annuities!
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book because I am in my late 40's and ready to concentrate on saving money for retirement. I had heard of Annuities, but never took the time to learn everything about them. This book really helped me to understand the details of annuities. This book is easy to follow and gives examples that clearly explain the material. What I especially enjoyed about the book was i didn't feel I was being sold something, but rather that the author was genuinely explaining the ins and outs of annuities. The author explained both the pros and cons of each available annuities. I feel like I have a much better understanding of my retirement options and I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in their retirement or investing in general.

Sincerely,

Greg Patterson

From Booklist
Another collaboration by the team behind God Gave Us You (2000), this book will resonate with many adopted children as well as their adoptive parents. The story is presented as a cherished and much-repeated bit of bedtime conversation between Mama Fox and Little Fox. Asked about “the day I came home,” Mama talks about how long she dreamed about and waited for Little Fox. Little Fox asks, “You were lonely for me?” and Mama’s affirmative response, for which several spreads of illustrations are provided, makes them cuddle all the closer: her pain is simultaneously shared and assuaged by Little Fox. Little Fox also asks about why he couldn’t stay “with the mother who had me,” and Mama responds in a warm and assuring tone. Bryant’s appealing images, mostly gentle pastels, are sweet but not saccharine, portraying these anthropomorphous animals as intelligent, loving, and wonderfully matched. A nice introduction to adoption for any child, adopted or not. Preschool-Grade 1. --Abby Nolan

Cute book
By lquin103
Super cute book! My nephew just finalized the adoption of his little girl,so I bought this for them. The pictures are beautiful and the story is cute. However, it only talks about the mother's feelings. I would've liked for the father to have been part of the story as well.

the waiting is the hardest part
By Glenn H.
This sweet, beautiful little book so perfectly captures just how emotionally HARD it is for adoptive parents to wait for their child to come home. What I especially like is that it does this not in a "woe is me, it was a pain to wait" sort of way, but rather in a way that tenderly shows to the child just how deeply you (the adoptive parent) yearned for him/her to come into your family -- and how deeply he/she is loved.

When I read this story to my 4-1/2 year old son (adopted from South Korea), he always wants to know why Momma Fox is so sad as she waits, and waits, and waits. Of course, the answer is that she so eagerly yearned for her child to come home -- and this opens us up to talking about our own feelings of how glad we are that he, and his younger sister, are now part of our family.

The story is presented as a favorite bedtime story that Momma Fox tells her little one, so of course we know right from the start that her child WILL come home, and her yearning WILL turn to joy. Nevertheless, when I get to the part of the story when Little Fox finally comes home, it's hard to keep back the tears.

In fairness, if you flat-out don't believe in God, and do not feel that that there is anything supernatural in how adoptive families are brought together, than this is not the book for you. But for anyone else who wants a children's story about the emotions behind the adoption experience, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

What a wonderful Book
By MAC's Mom
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!!
Based on all the reviews I read before I bought this book for our little girl who we adopted domestically, I was a little nervous. But when I got it and read it, I must say that this is one of my FAVORITE books!! My husband and I had struggled and continue to struggle for years with infertility, it was something that at first we were very private about, but as our journey has progressed I have become much more open about - in an effort to support other woman like myself. Both my husband and I work with children and they have always been a big part of our lives. When we were trying to get pregnant and when we were waiting for a baby it was at times very hard for me to go to friends baby showers, see other mothers with strings of children that they were screaming at at - while at the grocery store etc, etc.....the longing and tinge of jealousy was an emotion I felt very guilty about. I loved the way that the book, acknowledged this yearning to be a mom and how difficult it is at times, in a very sweet, simple and beautiful way, while talking about the whole journey of adoption and the blessing it has been. The other aspect I loved is that it talks about her birth mother and addresses why the little fox was adopted and that both mothers share a common prayer for the same child. The adoption of our daughter has been one of the most profound and beautiful blessings in my life, she brings us such happiness and it has been wonderful to share all these feelings with her in one book! I feel like this book was written especially for me - just as much as it was written for our little girl! And all of my friends who adopt will be getting a copy!!

The Last Highlander, by Sarah Fraser

Fans of C.J. Sansom must read this Saltire Society Literary Awards Scottish First Book of the Year – a great non-fiction adventure about Scotland’s most notorious clan chief.

Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, was the last of the great Scottish chiefs – and the last nobleman executed for treason. Determined to seek his fortune with the exiled Jacobite king in France, Fraser acted as a spy for both the Stuarts and the Hanoverians; claimed to be both Protestant and Roman Catholic.

In July 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie launched his last attempt to seize back the throne, supported by Fraser and his clans. They were defeated at Culloden. Fraser was found hiding in a tree.

This swashbuckling spy story recreates an extraordinary period of history in its retelling of Fraser’s life. He is surely one of Scotland’s most notorious and romantic figures, a cunning and ambitious soldier who died a martyr for his country and an independent Scotland.

Excellent, evocative and historically detailed!
By John Fraser
This book starts out with an introduction to the life of the Scottish Highlands in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, providing the stage setting for the remarkable exploits and life of Simon Fraser, the last member of the British House of Lords to be beheaded on Tower Hill. The author portrays a young man raised to the sound of Gaelic poetry, bagpipes, and the legends of the Clan Fraser. His father was a possible heir to the Barony of Lovat, but of a junior line. Only when the senior line died out without a male heir did Simon's father inherit the Barony. The men of the Clan Fraser fell into line behind Simon and his father, following ancient Highland custom.

A MacKenzie lord, allied with the Atholl Murrays, then conspired to use every trick in the Scottish legal system to subordinate the Frasers to the MacKenzies. Simon rallied the Frasers to resist, eventually resulting in the MacKenzie candidate (and husband of the female heir of the senior line) being jailed while a gibbet was built outside his jail cell at Castle Dounie - the Fraser stronghold. The MacKenzie candidate resigned his claims to the Fraser clan and its lands. Simon became Chief of the Frasers and Lord Lovat when his father died soon thereafter.

The author, who is married to a Lovat Fraser, tells the ensuing tale in a way that evokes the dangers, the loyalties, and the many ways that Scotland's legal system was subject to corruption in the early 18th century. Simon was eventually outlawed in Scotland and fled to the Jacobite court in France, where he met King James and Louis XIV, and tried to win back his claims to a Highland estate by planning and promoting a Jacobite invasion of Scotland. Simon was jailed by order of King Louis.

The tale of how the Fraser subchiefs sent a loyal chief to rescue Simon, how Simon led the Frasers in capturing Inverness and supporting Hanover against a Jacobite invasion, and how eventually Simon won back the favor of King George I, is a tale of espionage, double-dealing, derring-do, and a very accurate portrait of the conspirators in both London and St. Germain-en-Laye.

After describing the failed, early Jacobite rebellions, the author weaves a tale of Clan Fraser recovery, largely through Simon's masterful use of favoritism, corruption, and a judicial appeal to the British House of Lords that was a plain and gross breach of the 1707 Treaty of Union. From 1719 to 1745, Simon did everything he could to restore the Clan Fraser.

The author invokes the color, the traditions, and the plain hard facts of Scottish Highland life in the 18th century. Without excessive sentiment, the acts leading to the destruction of Clan Fraser - and the complete frustration of all the hopes of Simon Fraser - are all laid out with historical accuracy and contemporary details. The author suggests that Simon supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 because the Hanoverian government had withdrawn its financial and political support, and that Simon gambled all and lost. The sad story of how Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, sent his oldest son and his Clan into the 1745 rebellion and destruction, and how Simon was eventually executed after a trial in the House of Lords, is well and truly told.

[ A Must Read]
By karin morgan
A look into Scotland's politics at the time.A great insight into Scottish life, and how Simon Fraser saved his clan. Also how the Scottish had to navigate British rule. A great read, anyone interested in Scottish history before and after the 1745 uprising should read it. Once I started reading, could not put down. Coming from an American History buff

Accessible and Gripping.
By Kate Barber
I bought this book after reading Max Hasting's favourable review in the Sunday Times. The Last Highlander book is a must read for those interested in Scottish History, the Jacobite cause and Bonnie Prince Charlie. But Sarah Fraser's book is also suitable for those interested in good historical biographies and colourful characters. Fraser uses the life of Lord Lovat as a prism, to then shine a light upon the politics, wars and culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Lord Lovat is a classic rogue. We may not always approve of his behaviour, but we always enjoy his company. There is a great set piece opening, with Lovat heading to his execution, but such is the author's talent - and Lord Lovat's dramatic life - that we are still gripped by what will happen next.

From Publishers Weekly
Newbery Honor author Lasky (Sugaring Time) deserves high marks for her attempt to present formal mathematical concepts in a picture-book format. The result, however, is a somewhat uneven amalgam of fable, history and science that struggles to find an appropriate age group. She tells the story of Eratosthenes, the ancient Greek librarian who figured out how to calculate the circumference of the earth by a sophisticated process involving sun and shadows. In an author's note, Lasky explains that since there is little extant documentation pertaining to Eratosthenes himself, her job as historian became to "responsibly imagine based on what we already know." Unfortunately, the simplistic language and imagery she uses to describe his life contrast awkwardly with the somewhat daunting details of his mathematical innovations. Older readers who can understand abstract calculations might well be put off by such lines as "More than two thousand years ago a very smart baby was born." Hawkes (see The Nose, reviewed above) handsomely illustrates both the mathematical and historical concepts with his signature touch of whimsy. His stunning acrylics add significant interest to the volume. Ages 6-10.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-This picture book covers the life of Eratosthenes of Cyrene, a geographer who estimated the circumference of the Earth in around 200 B.C.. Though he was in fact a librarian, he is famous for his scientific accomplishments. Since little is known about his personal life, Lasky describes his early years in general terms. He liked to ask questions, loved learning at the gymnasium, and sailed off to Athens to further his studies. He became tutor to the son of King Ptolemy III of Egypt, and eventually became the head of Alexandria's magnificent library. Readers don't come to know the subject intimately, but they do get to know his times very well. The narrative is filled with fascinating details about his world. Hawkes's illustrations make a large contribution, as they contain authentic examples of the art, architecture, and social structure of ancient life. His paintings are rich and warm and filled with touches of humor, making the people, as well as their environment, come alive. The pictures combine with the text to give a clear explanation of how the man came to make his key discovery about the Earth's circumference. A fine combination of history, science, and biography.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. Introducing a person and a period largely unknown to children, this picture-book biography depicts the life of Eratosthenes, an ancient Greek who eventually became the head of the famous library in Alexandria. His most notable achievement was a remarkably ingenious method for measuring the earth's girth. After determining the angles of shadows in two cities and the distance between them, he used geometry to calculate the circumference of the earth.

Illustrating the text with warmth and humor, Hawkes' acrylic paintings capture the period details of the setting and clarify the geometric concepts used in the measurement. The often dramatic compositions vary from page to page, while the sunlit reds, oranges, and yellows glow brightly against the cooler blues and greens. Even unnamed characters look like individuals, with their own concerns and personalities. Hawkes' attention to detail and his occasional visual humor will reward any child who studies the illustrations.

Entertaining as well as instructional, the text presents the man, the story, the geometry, the geography, and the ancient world itself in simple prose. Lasky can be commended for making history so readable. And yet . . . is it history? Is it biography? Or is it fiction?

In the introductory "Author's Note," Lasky explains that there are gaps in our knowledge of Eratosthenes and that "we cannot fill them in by making up facts, but we can try to responsibly imagine based on what we already know, which is what I've tried to do in this book." Unfortunately, the reader has no way of knowing what parts of the book are factual and what parts spring from Lasky's imagination. As a baby, was Eratosthenes really "curious and full of wonder"? Well, probably; most babies fit that description. Did he "crawl across the kitchen floor to follow the path of ants"? Maybe. Did he wonder "why there were beads of water on the cistern in the morning" and "why the stars stayed in the sky"? Or did the author "responsibly imagine" that part? How about the details of school life at the gymnasium in Cyrene? Was Eratosthenes "a real whiz in math" as a schoolboy? Or does Lasky imagine that he must have been a whiz as a child because of his later achievements in the field as an adult?

A more careful wording of the text would separate knowledge from supposition, a fundamental principle of scholarship. When she speaks of Eratosthenes measuring the earth's circumference, Lasky says, "Perhaps he imagined the earth as a grapefruit." The word perhaps makes all the difference. If she had taken that approach from the beginning, this book would be outstanding. As fragmentary as the record may be, there's something special about real history, and readers can sense it.

The old juvenile biographies with invented conversations fell out of favor for good reason. Readers count on nonfiction to deliver the truth: maybe not the whole truth, but nothing but the truth, within the limits of the author's knowledge. Eratosthenes sounds like a fascinating man, but it's difficult to sort out which parts of this book are historically accurate and which are not. The author's and illustrator's bibliographies of 25 books and articles reassure us that they know what is history and what is invention. But in calling the book a biography, the author has a responsibility to let readers know, as well. Otherwise, the book should be placed in the equally respectable category of historical fiction, which also requires enormous research but gives greater range for an author's imagination.

Although flawed in its presentation of the main character, The Librarian Who Measured the Earth belongs in many libraries because it contains an entertaining introduction to the ancient world, a clear explanation of Eratosthenes' measurement of the earth, and remarkably vibrant illustrations. Great job combining math, history, science & geography!
By ChristineMM
This is a picture book format biography of Eratosthenes, who lived in Ancient Greece, focusing on how he calculated the size of the Earth using a mathematical formula and measurements taken by measuring shadows and length of footsteps from one location to another. Eratostehenes had many roles and talents, one being that he was a mathematician and author of books on several topics. He wrote the first geography book, which included the first map of the world and the first documentation of the size of the Earth.
The publisher says this is for ages 4-8 however the math concept of the formula he used to determine the size of the Earth was too complex for my 6 year old to grasp. The text is long-ish compared to a typical picture book as well, so I think this can extend a little beyond 8 yrs. if it is acting as a brief biography. I am not sure how many chapter book format biographies are out there for kids 9 and up on Eratosthenes, so this may be better than nothing for older kids!
The colorful pictures are nice and really compliment the text, especially when showing how he thought about measuring the Earth and comparing it to a grapefruit. It also addresses the idea of asking questions, curiosity, and making guesses at answers about things in the world that they did not yet know about.
This is a combination of history, math, and geography with a little scientific thought thrown in. It laid out his first questions and theories and how he came up with different ideas to come up with a way to measure a part of the land. We learn about what worked and what failed, leading up to how he finally came to a method that he thought was accurate, and why he thought this formula would work. His computation was about 200 miles off of the distance we measured in this century!
Within the story we learn about what schools were like for boys in Ancient Greece, that books were in scroll format, what libraries were like (and that they were rare) and other tidbits.
There is a bibliography included that can be used for further reading resources as well. This book is also a great example of how one book can cross over several subject areas: math, history, science and geography.

Great inter-disciplinary material
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for students of all ages! The story of the project to measure the earth well before Columbus reminds student that history has myths. Many people not only knew the earth was round but also about how big it was. Columbus ignored this ancient data and grossly miscalculacted the circumference. This book is a resource for studies across the curriculum. Including history, math, and geography in a fairly easy to read format. The age 4-8 for reading level is not accurate. The reading is probably around intermediate grade level and much of the technical information is secondary school level. It is a super adition to any library.

Perfect for Middle School Math & "Read Across America"
By MOR
As a teacher, I've used this book for several years as a "read-aloud" in my sixth grade math classroom. I time it with my geometry units. It's a hit every time. The kids truly love it, and ask great follow-up questions. The book explains the math involved in finding the circumference of the earth 2000 years ago. The language and great illustrations make the math easy to understand. Since the students also read mythology in reading class, it's a perfect cross-curricululm connection. In the past two years, I've timed it to coincide with the "Read Across America" movement on March 2.

Welcome to your nightmare
By Deleuze623
Someone commented that this is a gem for graduate level study--maybe it is. However, for an undergraduate survey course in genetics, this book is a mess that will leave you frustrated and perplexed without feeling like you've actually learned anything. Our professor made a deal with us: most of the exams will come from the back of chapter problems. Fair enough, I thought. However, I soon began to realize that the problems AND answers were so wordy and disorganized that what should have been a boon was just confusing me even more and leaving me directionless before an exam. Part of the problem is that this text is too detailed. Another huge problem is that the solutions manual is riddled with wrong answers. After the semester was already halfway over, our professor provided us with the errata for the solutions manual and it was disorganized and incomplete as well. For a class that could have been illuminating and genuinely great, this book single-handedly made it its mission to keep the class average below 50. What a piece of garbage. Correct and edit, please.

Avoid if you can
By B. Beyer
This book is utter garbage. I can't get through a chapter without having to check the internet for corrections and mistakes that are littered throughout this book. Not to mention the lack of proof reading in the end of chapter questions. This book made Genetics hell for me, and I despise that it was a required text. Maybe the editors should fix the problems instead of making new editions of this trash.

Avoid at all costs
By Mansour Zand
This is a terribly written textbook. It reads like an instruction manual, and takes two pages to get the idea or concept. My professor was repeatedly frustrated with the structure and formatting. I'm just baffled by how awful this book is!

Commendable and improved
By Will Jerom
Fisher has certainly improved and expanded upon her "Living Religions" book. It has become standard fare at universities for world religion, and its reputation for its thorough, well-developed chapters is well-deserved. Students should be served well by this textbook in world-religion classes. I would give it 5 stars, except for a few reservations. Gandhi is given short shrift here, and is a fairly major Hindu figure. He appears in bits and scattered pieces. The chapter on indigenous religions I have always found to be a bit wandering and rambling, and still find this to be the case. Overall the book is intensely comprehensive, but perhaps too long. These are not major flaws, however, as I still find this a very commendable work on world religions.

Excellent textbook and you learn a lot about religion.
By M. Osborne
I had to get this textbook for a class I was taking and I really enjoyed reading it. It wasn't very detailed on the Christianity chapter but the other chapters (Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism and others) where very easy to follow and you wanted to keep reading and find out about the other religious beliefs and cultures. I am very happy that my instructor chose this book to help us learn about different religions.

Interesting beginning-level text
By Pansy lynn
While this is a reasonable book for an introduction to world religions, I found that it goes too deep on some subjects, and not deep enough on others. For example, in the Christianity section, you will learn a lot about Roman Catholicism, but so much about Protestantism. Indigenous religions may have been better served by concentrating more in depth on a few sample religions, to give the flavor of the many varied beliefs, rather than trying to include such a variety of information that the chapter felt rambling and disjointed. One very good thing about the book is that it tries to present the positive side od allv religions, while not denying that their is also a not-so-positive side to most.
