Worth the price and then some

Old English has the reputation (among non-linguists) of being very difficult to learn. But I found this book well-organized, clear, and with sound pedagogical strategies. After a week of nightly half hour practices, I could read a few paragraphs aloud with relative ease - and understand them!

About the Author
Barbara Getty, MAT, has taught calligraphy and handwriting for over 25 years, and elementary school for 14 years. She has been an instructor at Lewis and Clark College, Portland Community College and Portland State University (in Portland, Oregon), currently conducts workshops on calligraphy and italic handwriting, and was featured on CNN. She studied with Lloyd Reynolds and Jacqueline Svaren. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and published in International Calligraphy Today. She is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College, did postgraduate work at Portland State University, receiving her MAT from Lewis and Clark College.

Inga Dubay, BA, has taught calligraphy at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon, since 1975, and was Book Arts Department Head for six years. She also taught at Portland State University and has conducted numerous calligraphy and handwriting workshops across the country including several International Calligraphy Conferences. She studied at Mills College, received her degree from the University of Oregon, and did post-graduate work at the Art Academy in Oslo, Norway, the University of Oregon, and the University of California, Berkeley. She studied calligraphy with Lloyd Reynolds and Lois McClelland. Her work has been shown in national and international juried and invitational exhibitions, and has been published in Calligraphy Review, Martha Stewart Living and Lettering Arts.

Both authors travel all over the country giving seminars to physicians and medical professionals on how to write legibly.

I have used this series for years with great results. The books are interesting and the method of writing is easy to learn and especially easy to transition from printing to cursive. I highly recommend these.

great book, but the workbooks make practice easier!

I have my children using these books, and wanted to fine tune my handwriting by getting the manual...easier said than done. It could be done with a lot of practice, but for the kids, I recommend sticking with the workbooks in order!

Need more Information

I just received Book A to the series & the writing lines are too far apart for easy use by my five-year-old, even though the lessons are darling. Instead, I will use the instruction booklet and lined paper where the line width is more manageable. I would appreciate if Amazon would list how far apart the lines are in each of the books so I can avoid ordering and returning, as I will be doing with Book A.

Thankful for this information!

I am so thankful I read this book... the cat got my tongue in grade 6, when I was laughed at while speaking in class! Painful. Now, many years later, I still dislike (often dread) speaking in public. This book provided me with many useful tools, clever techniques and concise strategies to help me overcome. It is well written, easy to read and through, but mostly, incredibly helpful...like a pep-talk to my authentic self. Thank you. I think I electronically dog-eared almost every page!

A Great Learning Tool

As a writer and an aspiring speaker, I took away a lot of great tips, techniques and resources from this book. There is a great balance between explaining a technique and demonstrating it through story, making the read an enjoyable learning experience. I especially like the ideas for dealing with fear. This is a book I will continually refer back to when preparing and practicing for a speech.

Good reading

This is a good book for those who have never had to speak in public in front of a small or large group. I used it to brush up on some skills after being away from needing to speak in front of groups for a while. The books format was easy to read and was not full of filler. The author used real world examples that were very helpful.

English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) is most famous for his satirical caricatures and moral paintings, the forerunners of cartoons. In this instructive volume, the august painter and engraver discusses and illustrates the use of serpentine lines in the expression of grace and beauty. Hogarth defines six qualities—fitness, variety, regularity, simplicity, intricacy, and quantity—and dramatizes their effective combination in images that employ S-shaped lines.
