Exceeding expectations but with one disadvantage

The new release of CPR book is really amazing, long chapters have been re-edited and the material is very up to date. The papers are of good quality.

The only disadvantage is that lww wanted to retain the rights of photocopy, so some chapters are only available on the point website without being included in the book. This is a real disadvantage for students or readers who want to have the hard copy in hand!!!

Super happy with this purchase!

Excellent book to help prepare for FPGEE. I was very scared facing this exam because I just have to pass it, considering it costs more than a $1,000 to sit for it. I followed the exam blueprint published by NABP and matched them with the topics presented in this book, 85% of the materials mentioned in the blueprint is in this book. I was not aiming for a perfect score of 150 (highest score possible to pass FPGEE) but I needed to at least be familiar with most of the topics in the blueprint, so this book did that. I passed FPGEE with a score of 86.

The cons of this book is that there are some minor typos, mismatched answer to practice questions and it is 'old'. The first edition was published in 2010 and before the purchased I tried to find the latest edition (I was hopeful that there is a 2nd or 3rd edition since it was first published, which contains updated material) but there is none.

Overall, I am happy with this purchase and will use it again to face NAPLEX after I finish my 1,500 hours of internship as a foreign pharmacy graduate who wants to be licensed as a pharmacist here in the US.

I am a first year pharmacy student and I got this book to help me study for my exam and also to start getting used to NAPLEX style questions. So far it has met my expectations. I like the practice questions at the end.

Excellent book

I am a newcomer to the field of photovoltaics and was looking for a book simple to understand but robust in content that would convey the fundamental concepts effectively. So far I am halfway through the book, reading during my coffee breaks and before bedtime and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I came to choose this book not by anyone's recommendation or referral but by the affordability and judging the table of content and few sample pages. Most of the other books in this area are so expensive, you have to sort of gamble a hefty amount of money to gain a very little perspective on the nature and scope of the field of photovoltaics. This book so far seems to be very good except there are some countable number of typos that sort of distract during the reading.

good book, but horrible on a kindle

Overall this is a good book, more mathematically detailed than Green's classical book on solar cells, but not quite the same clarity and writing quality as Green. But the book does have a lot of good information, and I learned a lot reading it.

However, on the Kindle this is almost unreadable in places (kindle classic or fire hd). The equations are in tiny fonts (unchangeable) and many graphs and figures are so small and blurry that you can't read them. Amazon really needs to do a better job on the kindle tech books it releases.

About the Author

Chef Heston Blumenthal has been described as a culinary alchemist for his innovative style of cuisine. His work researches the molecular compounds of dishes to enable a greater understanding of taste and flavor. His restaurant the Fat Duck, in Bray, Berkshire, England, was awarded three Michelin stars in 2004, and voted the Best Restaurant in the World by an international panel of 500 culinary experts in Restaurant magazine's list of the World's Best Restaurants 2005. Blumenthal lives in Berkshire with his wife and three children.

Fascinating

Heston has an (scientific) obsession for making the best tasting and best looking food possible. This obsession is likely to make him legendary.

This is a cookbook for a small minority of customers. You must have an interest in molecular gastronomy methods. You must have a budget that allows you to eat at expensive restaurants. You must like odd people that don't conform to all the norms of society.

Other reviewers have pointed out the recipes are extremely complicated. A lot of details are given, but you should be prepared to shell out a couple of thousands of dollars on (used) equipment before you can get started. The book has some pictures of the dishes, but could do with more descriptive pictures.

However, this is just not a glossy book to boost the ego of its author. I find the discussion around taste, chemistry and visuals relating to each recipe very interesting. You really get a look into Heston's thought process. I don't think Heston has used a ghost writer. I would imagine this can inspire both professional chefs as well as amateur cooks, if so inclined. One place to start experimenting might be with the whisky gums, which don't require any expensive equipment.

Heston's general approach is to perfect a dish. You can set out to do something similar given your budget constraint. If you don't have a professional vacuum sealer maybe try with cheap 100 dollar device, and see what happens. Or my might use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air of the bag. The only thing you need is time!

There is one other audience for this book and that is people interested in the creative process in general. The long biographical essay describes an obsessive person setting out to do something creative. It is written in a fascinating manner, if and only if you are interested in the creative process. Actually this section could serve as ispiration for some young people to follow their intuition rather than go for a very safe career. For this type of reader, I can also recommend Adria's "A day at Elbulli".

I would recommend this edition of the book. It is a normal hardcover edition. There is also a superexpensive big edition. I would not recommend that unless you want to have a thick tome to impress. The cheaper edition is hardcover too, so more than enough for most people.

UPDATE: Now when Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking is published, that should be your first serious book on the subject.

Even if you never make a recipe from it, it will change the way you think about cooking

I don't really like to review books online, as so much of the review is subjective. I'll make an exception for the Fat Duck Cookbook. It's that good.

First off, the recipes are amazing... as they should be, since they are the exact recipes used in Blumethal's world-renowned restaurant. They are also elaborate. If you decide to make one, think of it as a quest rather than as a traditional recipe to be made in an afternoon - most of these will involve a good deal of searching for ingredients, a large amount prep time, and sometimes specific equipment ranging from just hard-to-find to hard-to-find AND really expensive.

Even if you don't make the recipes... even if this book didn't HAVE any recipes, it would still be great. The photos and art are nearly worth the asking price on their own. Huge, glossy, detailed pictures of some of the most intricate and intricately plated dishes I've ever seen. Enough beautiful abstract art to justify it as a coffee table book in this respect alone. Furthermore, each recipe is accompanied by an essay on the development of that recipe and thoughts on exactly what makes that recipe work, or why previous iterations of it did not work as well. You don't have to make the recipes to find this type of commentary useful.

Then there are the other two thirds of the book. One is somewhere between an autobiography and a treatise on the author's culinary formation and thought process. Sound dull? It isn't. In part because of how well it is written - relatable, brisk, to the point. Even more so because of Blumenthal's enormous insight into both the art and science of cooking. He explains his process in creating and perfecting his food using specific examples. He alludes to the science he uses whenever applicable - his explanations are neither dumbed down nor are they a single bit more complicated or hard to understand than need be.

I found myself using a highlighter while reading it to mark things I wanted to look up later.

And as though Blumenthal somehow knew about my highlighter, he included as the last third of the book an index of terms, descriptions of equipment and ingredients, and essays on the scientific aspects of cooking and eating. Essay topics range from emulsions to how taste and pleasure are related via the brain. Most of these essays are not by Blumenthal - they are written by scientists who have influenced Blumenthal and added to his understanding.

I should point out, I guess, that this book is probably not for most culinary novices. The pictures might go over well, but the rest will be like showing calculus to someone who's still learning to add. But for pros and dedicated amateurs, I don't think a cookbook gets much better. It's inspiring, beautiful, and informative. As much as it can teach about the science of cooking, it has just as much insight into the art of cooking - what associations, effects, textures, contexts, and flavors make a dish great. In this way, it is just as invaluable to the classical cook as the cutting edge one. It prompts you to look at a dish and wonder 'In a perfect world, what could make this even better?' And suggests that whatever the answer is, it may well be possible.

Wonderful

My goodness what a wonderful cookbook. Ok, so few will be making the recipes in here, but the Fat Duck isn't rated 2nd in the world because you can make the food at home. You will learn so many interesting things. Nitro green tea and lime mousse will make perfect sense after you read his thought process. It's great to be able to look into the mind of a genius for only $35. I love the Alinea cookbook but this is much better. I almost wish I would have splurged and bought the big version.

One of the best Korean books I've seen

I bought this book as an additional source to other books I had and I must say that this is the best one I've seen. I orginally bought it on the Kindle but I've realized that the Kindle, although great for reading regular books where you go from start to finish is great, it is not so good for text books where you go back an forth for reference or check answers near the back of the book. It's very annoying for when you have to flip back and forth to different sections on the Kindle. Also, the book comes with audio cd's and when you buy on the Kindle, they do NOT send you the CD's which is a rip off. Although in this particular case, the CD's are not good. As good as the book is, the CD's are bad. The audio quality is not good in many parts with background noise, they pronounce the Korean so slow, no one talks that way. And the English guy (with a very heavy English accent) is almost as hard to understand. What sounds like "muddle" is "model" and what seems like "damaged it" is "don't mention it". Anyway, I found the CD's a total waste, but the book is precious. I highly recommend it.

Aimed at conducting Korean business

This book is okay if you would like to learn Korean for business and are already familiar with the basics of Korean. It attempts to teach you the basics of Korean grammar while teaching you conversation that is relevant to business. I think it is too fast paced for a true beginner, and is more appropriate for an advanced beginner. The book comes with exercises, and answers on the back, as a well as CD which are all helpful for individuals learning Korean on their own. The male speaker on the CD does not sound like a native Korean speaker, but his speech is still good and may actually be easier for non-native speakers to understand. I give it 3 starts instead of 4 because I would have liked to have seen 2 more chapters in the beginning about basic Korean grammar, with shorter, easier conversations about non-business topics like family.

Great for people with some knowledge of Korean

I had been picking up Korean here and there, living in Korea for a while, and had already become well-established in reading and writing hangul (korean characters), beforehand, so this book was perfect for me! I'm more than a quarter of the way through and I feel like it's really putting the pieces together for me and explaining things that I hadn't been able to fully grasp on my own. It's like a private tutor! Definitely a must have for people who are really trying to grasp the language.
