In today's complex digital world, we must understand new media expressions and digital experiences not simply as more technologically advanced forms of "writing" that can be understood and analyzed as "texts" but as artifacts in their own right that require a unique skill set. Just as agents seeking to express themselves in alphabetic writing need to be literate, "egents" who seek to express themselves in digital media need to be--to use a term coined by cybertheorist Gregory Ulmer-- electrate. In Inter/vention, Jan Holmevik helps to invent electracy. He does so by tracing its path across the digital and rhetorical landscape--informatics, hacker heuretics, ethics, pedagogy, virtual space, and monumentality--and by introducing play as a new genre of electracy. Play, he argues, is the electrate ludic transversal. Holmevik contributes to the repertoire of electrate practices in order to understand and demonstrate how play invents electracy. Holmevik's argument straddles two divergences: in rhetoric, between how we study rhetoric as play and how we play rhetorically; and in game studies, between ludology and narratology. Games studies has forged ludology practice by distinguishing it from literate practice (and often allying itself with the scientific tradition). Holmevik is able to link ludology and rhetoric through electracy. Play can and does facilitate invention: play invented the field of ludology. Holmevik proposes a new heuretic in which play acts as a conductor for the invention of electracy. Play is a meta behavior that touches on every aspect of Ulmer's concept of electracy.

Valuable Reference

Great reference. I've used the 2nd Ed. of this book until recently. A number of other engineers in my office also use this book for quick reference. The best part about this book is that it also contains the original reference chapter by chapter, so you can back track most of the information stated in this book, and includes equipment by manufacturers that we regularly use. Definitely recommend this book, I'm not aware of any other book as good as this one is.

The original printing was excellent, but the 2nd and 3rd editions both have errors in descriptions and equations (the 2nd edition is MUCH worse), making them suspect at best and utterly useless at worst as a reference guide.

IRELAND IN THE AGE OF THE TUDORS
1447-1603

The original version of this book, Tudor Ireland: Crown, Community and the Conflict of Cultures, 1470-1603, was published in 1985 to general acclaim. It was soon established as the standard account of the period; and its continuing success led to the inauguration of the ambitious new six-volume Longman History of Ireland, from St Patrick to the present day, with Steven Ellis as General Editor. Since a new edition of the earlier text was due, Professor Ellis has taken the opportunity to transform it into something still more formidable, purpose-built for the series into which it is now incorporated.

Several years in preparation, the result is far more than just a revision. Fully updated, the text has not only been greatly expanded (with two new chapters, the new version is over 25% longer than the old), but also extended back a generation. It now also covers the important years from 1447 to 1470, when the Lancastrian collapse in England and France led to a crisis of lordship in English Ireland that provides a crucial context for its subsequent history under the Tudors. The other entirely new chapter examines in much greater detail than before the Gaelic response to Tudor expansion.

The book explores Ireland as a frontier society divided between the English and Gaelic worlds. Our understanding of both worlds, and their interaction (culminating in the Tudor conquest and the collapse of Gaelic rule) has been transformed over the past thirty years through the detailed research of Irish and Tudor specialists alike; and this wealth of new scholarship is fully synthesised in the text. However, as before, Steven Ellis - an acknowledged expert on Tudor frontiers and state formation - also looks beyond the local detail of these developments to consider Ireland itself as a problem within the wider Tudor state.

He explores the relationship between the English crown, the English community and its Gaelic neighbours, and the nature of the transition from medieval Ireland s two nations to the centralized Tudor kingdom. The result is thus not only a survey: it is also a critique of traditional perspectives on the making of modern Ireland. Ellis argues that English rule in the late medieval lordship was quite successful in the years before 1534, and that its government presented similar (and far from intractable) problems to those of Wales and the English north. Yet, unlike these other English borderlands, Ireland gradually became entangled in an extraordinary departure from traditional Tudor methods in an ultimately disastrous attempt to extend�English civility by force. Thus, he concludes, Irish nationalism and Irish alienation from English rule were chiefly a consequence, rather than a cause, of the Tudor conquest.

Difficult but useful

I've been using Ellis' book in some recent research into the fiscal history of the Irish Lordship. I'm afraid I agree more with the first reviewer -- remember, the popularity of a book often varies inversely with its quality. Yes, the book contains a great deal of useful information, but it is confusingly arranged. Dr. Ellis gets a few facts wrong, although it doesn't seem too critical except when he attributes certain actions of Richard III to Henry VII. Overall, however, the reader had better already have a working knowledge of the subject before using this book. A large number of assumptions are made concerning the identity of individuals; Ellis seems to take for granted the reader already knows who they are. For a foreigner such as myself reading this book, these lacunae make for irritating diversions from the flow of the narrative. No, it is not a book for beginners, nor an adequate introduction. What the second reviewer hints, however, is correct also -- there isn't much else in the way of material from which to choose, and this book does a better job than most.

Has your reviewer actually seen the book? It has a colour picture of Cahir castle, Co. Tipperary on the dust jacket. It includes seven maps, three tables, a glossary of terms, and a guide to further reading. It is a revised version of the standard work on the subject used in universities in Ireland and Britain since the publication of the original work, TUDOR IRELAND, in 1985. The reason for this new edition was precisely the popularity and continuing sales of the original. Perhaps your reader wanted a more romantic, simplistic view of Ireland's past.

Ellis' book is too complex and extremely difficult to read. It certainly is not a good starting point for reading up on the Tudor History of Ireland. It contains absolutely no pictures or illustrations of any kind re-emphasing its difficulty.

Samuel Johnson once called the medical profession "the greatest benefit to mankind." In the 20th century, the quality of that benefit has improved more and more rapidly than at any other comparable time in history. With all the capabilities of modern medicine's practicioners, however, we as a people are as worried about our health as ever.

Roy Porter, a social historian of medicine the London's Wellcome Institute, has written an dauntingly thick history of how medical thinking and practice has risen to the challenges of disease through the centuries. But delve into its pages, and you'll find one marvelous bit of history after another. The obvious highlights are touched upon--Hippocrates introduces his oath, Pasteur homogenizes, Jonas Salk produces the polio vaccine, and so on--but there's also Dr. Francis Willis's curing of The Madness of King George, W. T. G. Morton's hucksterish use of ether in surgery, and research on digestion conducted using a man with a stomach fistula (if you don't know what that means, you may not want to know). Porter is straightforward about his deliberate focus on Western medical traditions, citing their predominant influence on global medicine, and with The Greatest Benefit to Mankind, he has produced a volume worthy of that tradition's legacy.

There has not been a book of this scope since Garrison's An Introduction to the History of Medicine (Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders), the fourth edition of which appeared in 1929. In reviving the single-authored, encyclopedic, universal history, Roy Porter seeks to make serviceable for the 21st-century reader a model that ultimately derives from the positivistic German medical handbuch of the 19th century. That he has mixed success is probably due more to the way readers and writers have changed than to any deficiencies on his part.

Best known for his prolific contributions to the social history of medicine, especially the history of popular healers and mental illness, Porter here demonstrates a confident familiarity with the "great doctors" and much else. Although discussions of the former constitute the core of the book, discussions of the latter are substantive and brilliantly condensed and conveyed. Porter's recurrent examinations of epidemiology, public health and demography, medical institutions, the social role of medicine and its practitioners, women and medicine, and treatment of mental disorders at various periods reveal admirably how medical historiography has broadened and deepened since Garrison's era.

Nearly half the text of this book follows a chronologic course from prehistoric times to the end of the 18th century (including surveys of Islamic, Indian, and Chinese medicine), whereas the past two centuries are approached thematically and, as Porter acknowledges, selectively. There are chapters on "Medicine, State, and Society" and "Medicine and the People," as well as chapters dealing with medical practice and research.

Throughout the book, Porter presents masterly introductory and concluding summaries of each section in a fluent, often amusing, and sometimes irreverent style. The text is enlivened by numerous quotes from lay and medical contemporaries. Although respecting his universalist goal, Porter explains that Western medicine receives the most attention because it has largely triumphed around the world, and he draws the majority of his historical case examples of professional and social developments from Great Britain (his own area of research).

What, then, are the problems with The Greatest Benefit to Mankind? The apparently few factual errors (several with respect to Vesalius, and the erroneous statement that Dr. Guillotin invented the instrument named after him), which are inevitable in such an ambitious survey, do not pose a serious problem, nor does the judicious coverage and balanced interpretation of medical history. Instead, as the extremely informative 45-page list of further readings (usefully rated by Porter with stars for those he has found most helpful) indicates, the problem is that medical historiography, particularly since around 1980, has experienced such a boom in quantity, quality, and diversity that no single-volume total history can hope to do more than briefly summarize while pointing the reader toward more extensive sources. Although readable, this book is dauntingly crammed with information that moves by at a rapid clip. It is likely to overwhelm the novice but hold few surprises for the specialist. It will probably find its greatest use as a modern, comprehensive, and reliable reference work, a point of entry to the literature and a valuable aid to those teaching the subject.

Remeber the days of pulverised crocodile dung...

During my time studying medicine I constantly found myself skipping between books, unable to locate all the historical information I was seeking in one volume. Would that I had "The Greatest Benefit to Mankind" back then! It seems that Roy Porter's students had the same issue which is what inspired the teacher-turned-author to write this book.

Porter's historical account of medicine and healing is fascinating and delves deep to reveal how people's attitudes toward medicine has changed over the years, including the big breakthroughs. While the book covers a global history, it is primarily European - which is explained by the fact that "Western medicine has developed in ways which made it uniquely powerful and... uniquely global." Sounds a bit like the power of imperialism...

The book is a refreshing read and is certainly anything but boring. His tone is comical, engaging, enlightening, and that of a lecturer all at once. Porter has structured his work perfectly and the chapter titles give you the option to quickly look up what you need to know if you're in a hurry. Perfect if you're a student! If you are simply interested in medical history this is a must-read, but be sure to also look at Sexuality: An Illustrated History.

Mistakes Will Irritate

Mr. Porter is in need of a better editor. Did Plato really live between 427 and 437 BC, dying at the age of negative ten? Although the typos are funny, most of the errors are actual failures to research or understand concepts. Asclepius's sign, for instance, is not called the caduceus. Rinderpest is not canine distemper (though they share the same genus), the word literally translates as "cattle plague!" These irritating errors were all found in the first 50 pages, and they keep coming. Today a googling can tell you this kind of stuff in less than a minute. I suspect this book was written without any electronic aids besides a word processor, in a time when readers had to take authors at their word. It's lazy. It's boring. It's not written to be easily read. A few bizarrely arranged sentences made me think I was having a stroke. It's like listening to a lecturing professor who you suspect is going senile.

El orden de las penas, como dice Virgilio en el canto XI, depende de la �tica Nicomaquea de Arist�teles, y prefigura una jerarqu�a del mal basada en el uso de la raz�n. La elecci�n de las penas sigue la "ley del contrapaso", que castiga los pecadores mediante el contrario de sus pecados o por analog�a a ella. En ese sentido, los pecadores m�s "cercanos" a Dios y la luz, es decir puestos en los primeros c�rculos, son los incontinentes, es decir aquellos que usaron el menor uso de la raz�n en pecar. Siguen los violentos, que fueron cegados por la pasi�n, si bien a un nivel de inteligencia mayor que los primeros. Los �ltimos son los fraudulentos y los traidores, que quisieron y realizaron el mal conscientemente. Entre los traidores hay cuatro categor�as: de quien se tiene confianza, de la patria, de los hospedantes y de las instituciones. Todos los pecadores del Infierno tienen una caracter�stica en com�n: sienten la lejan�a de Dios como el mayor castigo.

dont waste your money

since this book is in spanish i consider that my review should be in spanish:
"sinceramente al leer este libro siento que no tuvieron el cuidado de hacer una correcta traducci�n, a pesar de que no he leido el libro en su idioma original, si encuentro dificil de leer en espa�ol los versos ya que parece como si hubieran hecho una traduccion utilizando algun software y copiando la traducci�n literalmente, no se si esa era la intenci�n que tenia Dante cuando la escribi�, pero hay algunos pasajes que son realmente complicados de entender. Adem�s, el libro tiene muchos errores de ortograf�a, hasta el momento he le�do mas de 10, se supone que existen personas que revisas los libros antes de publicarlos cierto?."

Esta traduccion, fuera de los meritos del texto en si, una de las obras maestras de la literatura medieval/occidental/universal, agrada por la conservacion del estilo estructural rimado del autor. El Conde de Cheste, fuera quien fuese, hizo un trabajo digno del mas elevado elogio. Da gusto tener un texto asi, en castellano, si no equivalente al original, bien similar. Y algo mas, se comenta, antes de pasar a los primeros versos, algo util para tener en cuenta, es saber, que la obra tambien se puede ver como compendio de la cultura medieval, lo cual al lector le servira para estudiar una fase historica demasiado mitificada y mal comprendida.
