About the Author
Koos Eissen is associate professor and head of the Design Drawing Techniques staff (TU Delft, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, in the Netherlands). He is at present guest-lecturer at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Roselien Steur is a free-lance visualisor, and lecturer at the HKU/Utrecht School of the Arts, The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design in the Netherlands.

Examples-a-Plenty but Instruction is Sparse

The other reviews of this book appear to be describing another book altogether. This book has pages and pages of example sketches with small captions that describe conceptually what has been done. However, this book is *not* a textbook and it provides very little instruction. This book is more akin to a coffee table book of cool sketching examples.

A bit lacking, but inspirational.

This is a great book for inspiration, and it has bucket loads of great instruction on the techniques and rules of such things as perspective, ellipse construction etc. What it didn't have, and what disappointed me, is an almost total lack of media instruction. Almost every sketch in the book is done in marker, yet there is no info (at least none I have found, and none listed in the index for the sections I haven't read yet) on how to properly apply smooth blocks of colour, or the best way to apply pastel. There is loads of info on drawing construction. I have to agree with other reviewers on here, the grammar, spelling and layout is quite atrocious in many places. I understand that English is a second language for the people who wrote it but that is no excuse. If you can't properly speak a language, hire someone who can to fix your mistakes. The other issue I have with it is that it is a (very) thinly veiled mass-promo for Dutch designers. Many of the accompanying real product examples have, in my opinion, tenuous at best relations to the drawing subject at hand, and they are almost entirely Dutch. Even the international companies featured, such as Ford, have Dutch designers working there and featured. I personally got way more out of "Design Sketching" by Erik Olofsson and Klara Sj�l�n from the Ume� Institute of Design.

Brilliant long awaited and much needed

As a professor in Industrial design drawing, this book is a long required book for teaching product design drawing, it has everything. I am thrilled with it and all other professors in my department are begging to borrow it from me.

Thank God for this book I have been using Powels books for years but this book includes new materials for drawing. More PLEASE!

I had to buy this book via Frame magazine.. why is amazon taking so long to have it in bountiful supply

I particularly liked the concept of Search Activity

An extraordinary textbook by an out-of-the-box thinker. Offers fresh views on a wide range of subjects, all presented in a style that is very readable and straight to the point.

I particularly liked the concept of Search Activity, or Search Behavior, which the author defines as:
"Active behaviour in conditions of uncertainy, when a person cannot forecast with one hundred percent certainty the outcome of his activity (…). However, he is able to assess adequately each intermidiate result on the way to the final goal and correct his behaviour as required".

The book echoes this feeling of constant search. It seems that this book is not only a summary of research, it is a search: a search for a way to present original ideas in a scientifically valid way, without losing contact with the freshness and originality of thought. For me, this search was fascinating to read, thought provoking, illuminating and fun, all at the same time.

This is a great and very optimistic easy-to-read book about human nature written by a prominent psychiatrist, psychologist, philosopher and publicist.
The book not only outlines important theoretical matters and ideas but also practically helps us to understand how to live a better and happier life respecting ourselves and others.
Prof. Vadim Rotenberg, the international well known scientist, is the author of the scientific hypothesis, describing the Search Activity as one of the most important psychological patterns of behavior. The book discusses the importance of Search Activity to our lives and survival.
The book contains a lot of little known interesting facts illustrating the ideas, conclusions and practical recommendations of the author.

Inspiring book

I've read this inspiring book of Vadim Rotenberg twice already and
each time I reread it, I find something new.
It discusses the main areas of scientific work of the famous psychiatrist and psychophysiologist:
search activity concept, sleep functions, brain hemisphere functions, and the main behavior principles.
These scientific topics are exposed in a very interesting and easily understandable style with many compelling examples.
The book was written not only to address scientists, instead it is relatable to anyone who wants to find a greater understanding of himself or herself.
For me as a musicologist and a life coach, the topics of creativity and the psychology behind the creation process are especially interesting.

This is the real deal on chord theory and voicings

This is not like 90% of other chord theory books that spend most of the time teaching novices what a triad is or what an interval is. This is left hand voicings AND theory presented in a manner with not only descriptions but discussion of application. It is like having a thoughtful instructor working with you. Connections between chords and applications are always discussed so that you get a far more useful in depth understanding of what to do with the chords learned. A CD is also included to help you hear what chords and progressions sound like. Play along sections are also included. Sweet. This book is really better than most others out there and you would do well consider this wonderful book. I have wasted a lot of bucks on less than good books and it is a big deal when I find a winner.

Great entry to jazz for late beginner / early intermediate

This book and CD make it easy to learn how to read a lead sheet, and it also helps a lot with rhythm and left/right-hand independence. It is not a comprehensive book, but it nicely fills a niche. The main limitation is, as advertised, that you only learn one left-hand voicing for each chord. The idea is that you can use the chord rhythmically in the LH and play the melody or improvise with the RH. Alternatively, if you are comping, you can easily learn the voicings with your RH and play the bass with your LH.

I think the book would be too overwhelming for a total beginner, because it assumes you can read treble and bass clef (you only need to know bass clef well enough to check that you've got the correct chord voicing). You'll also want a portable CD player or computer with the ability to adjust left/right balance, so you can play along with the drums & bass, which are recorded in the left channel (the piano is recorded in the right channel). Players who already have good independence between their hands can undoubtedly go through the book much faster than I can, but will still benefit from learning all of the nice jazz chords in order of increasing difficulty (see table of contents for a complete list). Each song and etude has a metronome marking so you can gradually work it up to speed before you try to play along.

The main limitation of the book is that you only learn one voicing for each chord, and you typically play the melody 8va to avoid having your hands crash into each other. But there are other books that cover alternative chord voicings (e.g., Mantooth). With this book, you'll get one set of voicings down pat so you don't have to pause and think about them. I think it is an excellent entry into jazz, and I look forward to working through the rest of the book.

Hardwork, but it's made a difference

I also took a half-day seminar from the author. There's no substitute for hard work and practice, practice, practice. But his book is good, it's made me faceup to things I've been avoiding for 30 years. I can see the difference right across my playing and I'm only about a third of the way through the book. This one will stick with you and build your skills.

I bought the book and by the title, I wasn't sure I was going to like the book. The first book, Addicted is a hard topic for many people. I usually buy me books for entertainment and to pull me away from the seemlier side of life I see at work. But, as they moved towards over coming the addiction and on to a long lasting romance, I was hooked. The addition of 4 other novels, Including the last and by my opinion the best "25 days", is what makes this bundle a 5 of 5.

About the Author
David Nelken is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Macerata in Italy. His book The Limits of the Legal Process (Academic Press, 1983) gained an American Sociological Association Distinguished Scholar Award. He is general editor of the International Library of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Dartmouth) for whom he is editing a volume on White-Collar Crime. He will also shortly be publishing a book with N Passas on Controlling EC Fraud and for Pluto Press a book entitled Law's Truth.

a unique book

I am a student at Stanford, and I had the pleasure of taking a CS course that used this book.

This is hands down the best introductory text I have come across on quantitative and computational methods for decision making and autonomous planning, with applications ranging from autonomous vehicle control to business decision making.

One reason this book is great is that it covers an incredible breadth of topics - everything from the foundations (decision making formalism, probabilistic modeling, sequential decision making basics) to rather advanced theory (POMDPs, newest advances in reinforcement learning) - without sacrificing the rigor and the depth of coverage. At the same time, the material is presented in a very logical order, which ensures that the new knowledge gradually builds on top of the theoretical foundation. The language of the book is plain, precise, concise and very easy to understand - even to people without advanced math background.

The quality of the math notation is in itself fascinating - the author has gone to great length to ensure all the math is very easy to read and comprehend. Finally, each chapter of the book provides an extensive literature review with up-to-date sources.
My impression is that this book could work well both as an introduction to the decision making methods, and as a review of a particular subfield. I strongly recommend this text.

An excellent overview of decision making theory, covering the basics of probability and probability models, games, Markov decision processes, and partially observable Markov decision processes. The book is well formatted and uses a consistent, clear, and concise mathematical style.
Kochenderfer covers a large variety of methods for tackling decision making problems. Algorithms are clearly outlined and are straightforward to implement on one's own.

Reece not for me

I enjoy this authors books, although this one was not for me. I found Reese to be niave and shallow. He spends half the book with another girl. His internal dialogue was all over the place. How he loves Chloe and knew something was not right the day she leaves him. But two days later he is with the girl who degrades Chleo when ever she can. He talks about how that was not something he is proud of but he stays with this girl the whole summer (and most the book) never once going to see Chloe. He talks about how hot his current girlfriend is and how he needs to be nicer to her and then he cannot stop thinking of Chloe. It was one contradiction after another and all he does is hurt the girl he loves and gives her up without a fight. Again I do enjoy this authors books but this one did not hit the mark.

Where can I get a Reece?

There are certain elements I have come to expect from Amity Hope's books.

A strong leading female.
That strong female always makes the first move with the leading male.
A kick-ass best friend.
A dose of realism in the climactic scene.

I am a little concerned that people are going to expect too much from this book. This isn't Twisted, it's not meant to be Twisted. It does not have the same heavy themes and the characters are not going to compare. This is a lighter read, but not completely without drama.

Cleo is a strong leading female, now a senior in high school. She has a lot of issues at home, all in the form of her younger sister's father, who I understand is her step-father. Cleo's mother died and she takes care of her younger sister, both emotionally and mostly financially, but sometimes her sister's father will contribute.

The story begins with Reece -- he is in love with Cleo and doesn't understand what happened between them. He's angry but is still trying to understand. The one comparison I can make to Twisted is that if Maya Anderson were a boy, she would be Reece.

Maya took rejection, was never deterred. I think Reece may actually top her on this one. After a seemingly perfect relationship that was healthy and stable, unlike most teenage relationships, Cleo drops Reece in the worst way in the world of a teenager.

At school, in front of everyone. Not only that, but as Reece is basically begging her not to break up with him, another guy walks up and Cleo takes his hand and walks away with him. Away from Reece.

After that humiliating and devastating experience, Reece STILL pursues Cleo when he realizes that everything isn't as it appears. Don't get me wrong, he isn't following her like a puppy trying to win her back. He figures out that she is hiding something, that she didn't break up with him to see other people as she originally said.

Most adults would struggle with that public rejection, but here is a teenage boy taking it like it's nothing. That's how much he cares about Cleo.

Little does he know, her secrets are deep. There is lying, betrayal, and cruelty. Not on Cleo's part, she isn't the only actor in this situation. She's just the main piece that takes the fall.

In the end, I like that Reece doesn't play hero. It's realistic, he doesn't use physical force to avenge Cleo. He's there for her, and does what he can to support her, but doesn't turn all Hulk.

As expected, the supporting characters are well developed and Cleo's best friend and sister are pretty amazing.

Reece and Cleo are a sickeningly perfect couple, they are solid and truly love one another. It's beautiful and you can't help but cheer for them.

Once again, Amity does not disappoint. This book edges toward the more adult side of YA, but I think it'd be great for any age.

I read this book because I recognized the author's name. I read a book called Twisted by Amity Hope and loved it. I figured this would be a good book as well. It definitely was.

I like the way the author builds her characters. The reader can't help but become engrossed in their lives. Reece is a great character. Although he comes from a privileged background he is not a snob. He is a caring, genuine guy. His feelings for Cleo are so apparent. Cleo is trying to survive her life. She wants to do what is right. She puts the needs of others before her own and that just really sucks. She is a teenager and shouldn't have to deal with what she does. Amity drew me in with these two characters.

The story line was a great one. At first the voice we hear is Reece's. He can't understand what went wrong with his relationship with Cleo. He is trying to figure it out. Then the reader gets a glimpse into Cleo's life and things start to fall in place. It's heartbreaking to see two people who belong together be kept apart. I like the way Reece starts to open his eyes to what's going on and that he doesn't give up on Cleo. This is a great read.

I like it when I can find an author that doesn't disappoint. This is the second book I have read by Amity Hope and both experiences were worthwhile. I will definitely read any other book by Amity Hope. Her writing is excellent and her characters are ones I can attach to. Very Satisfactory read.
