Ben Rosenfeld is the creator of the book "Russian Optimism: Dark Nursery Rhymes To Cheer You Right Up." He is also a stand up comedian who performs "intellectual comedy for the 99%." Fun read for the Russophile and non-Russian speaker alike

First off, I am happy to see this book make it from
Kickstarter to reality in such a short time! A fun book that highlights some of the Russian "children's poems" that may make you scratch your head but WILL make you laugh! It is a great collection that is artfully illustrated and will certainly not gather dust like so many coffee table books tend to do.

#Note: I bought it through Kickstarter and the author was very responsive, informative, and hands-on throughout the process.

Definitely Worth Purchasing

OK, so these are more like Russian expressions than true nursery rhymes, but that said, what an insanely cute/funny book! The illustrations are great, and they are accompanied by English and Russian translations along with phonetic pronunciation for the Russian.

This will make a perfect gift for any Russophiles in your life.

As we all know, there are various kinds of humor in the world. And different people comprehend humor in many different ways. This book is a presentation of a very specific sector of a Russian Dark Humor. They called nursery rhymes, because the main characters are children. The humorous effect arrives from two things: 1) It is a play on combination of innocence and craziness/ horror. 2) Little children or nursery like rhyming enhances the humorous effect. They are part of the fun. That is why the author is using transliteration to convey the rhyming and rhythm.
Like I said before, this sector of humor is very specific. Yet this book is a gem for humor lovers, who collect samples of humor from around the world. Book has absolutely beautiful and funny illustrations.
I liked the book. And I admire the author, who had enough courage to undertake the difficult task of conveying very specific sector of Russian humor to the English speaking audience.

MOVINGLY ROMANTIC, GENUINELY RELEVANT, ORIGINAL, AN ABSOLUTE MUST-READ!!

"No one can know sincere happiness, Sophie, without first having known sorrow. One can never appreciate the enormity and rareness of such a fiery bliss without seeing misery, however unfair that may be."

There's a proverb that says, "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." This is the truly beautiful story of a young woman's journey from egocentricity to self-awareness, from having regard only for herself to being willing to sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of another human being. There is also a sublimely heart-melting love story embedded in the midst of one of the most moving, relevant and attention-worthy plotlines I've had the pleasure of reading of late. Nothing about this book is clich�, been-done-before or mundane. This is an emotional roller-coaster that will take you out of your usual literary comfort zone, grip you and keep you at the edge of your seat, begging for more.

Sophie Price is perfect. Her face is perfect. Her body is perfect. Everything in her life appears to be perfect. Her wealthy but neglectful parents have given her the type of lifestyle where everything has always been served to her on a silver platter, with no responsibilities or consequences for her actions. She is the `Queen Bee' of her little click of entitled kids, wanting for nothing and taking it all unapologetically. She is selfish, self-centred, an awful friend who uses and discards people only to feed her starving ego. But when Sophie is alone, a scared and insecure little girl emerges at times, one that believes that her beautiful features hide only ugliness inside her. She detests that weakness in her, always striving not to show any real emotions in front of people, hoping no one would ever notice how meaningless her life really is.

"I stood in front of the mirror and took a good hard look. I was as bare as I could make myself, no makeup with wet, stringy hair. I hated to look at myself in this state. I didn't feel real. After indulging in a life of debauchery and vice, life finally catches up with Sophie, turning her entire existence upside down and throwing her in the midst of Africa to serve a six-month sentence at Masego, a struggling orphanage for children affected by war and violence. It is there that she meets Ian/Dingane, a young man who appears to only see the `ugly Sophie' in her, one that does not belong or deserve to be at a place like Masego and one who would never make it there. For the first time in her privileged life, Sophie's looks or possessions are not what define her. She is forced to dig deep inside her shallow soul for infinite amounts of courage, compassion and love for the sake of the innocents that fulfill her days with unconditional trust and affection. Through those children, Sophie learns to appreciate the gift of life, first and foremost, and to never again take what is given to her for granted.

"Life, Sophie. They still live. They breathe, they love each other, they find joy in the world around them for no other reason than because they are children. They are resilient. They will always rise above. Always. It is a curious facet of the innocent young."

Her relationship with Ian changes as well, their physical attraction continuously growing and the trust between them building a firm bond between them. Through Ian's eyes, Sophie sees the person she wishes to become. He teaches her to draw strength from even the most painful of emotions, to see beauty in the small things in life and to love herself for her heart, not her appearance.

"Fear, sadness. They're not weaknesses. They are overpowering, defining emotions. They make you human, Sophie."

The connection between Ian and Sophie grows against all odds, two kindred spirits finding each other and desperately hanging onto one another in a dangerous world marred by political turmoil and instability, where survival and protection of those who cannot protect themselves becomes their first and only priority. Their love story develops gently and tastefully. Against a horrific backdrop of some of the worst sins that human nature is known to be responsible for, Sophie finally learns to love - love herself, love those who show her kindness, love those who deserve kindness from her. She also learns to love a man, deeply, openly and above all, selflessly.
"Men wanted me. They all did, however briefly, but none of them wanted to keep me. That's what I needed. I needed to be owned, loved. But not by a man. I knew then that I never needed to be kept by a man. What I needed was to love myself, to want to keep myself around. And in that revelation, I knew that if I wanted to keep myself, that a man wanting to keep me would just be a by-product. Who wouldn't want to keep someone who respected himself or herself?"

But this is not your average love story. Happiness has a hefty price tag in this beautiful tale of love, loss, courage and redemption. Our heroine travels a painful journey of self-discovery, learning to love and embrace the person she really is, and finally finding her true purpose in life. It is only then that Sophie truly becomes `beautiful'.

So amazing

I've eagerly awaited this book ever since it was announced. I had no idea what it's about, but you must understand something. I'm a Fisher Amelie fangirl. I eat up every sentence of her beautiful writing, conveying so much emotion with every single word. She is so amazingly talented I can truly say she is one of my favorite authors, and if she wrote about ducks swimming in a pond, I'd read it and love it.
But this is so much better than that.

Sophie Price is vain. To her and her family, keeping up appearances is the most important thing. Sophie doesn't care about what's inside, as long as everyone bows to her outside. I really felt for her - she has no real friends, she is way too mature for her age, she lives her life scheming against the people that surround her, and she is so desperately unhappy it made my heart ache for her. Seeing the change in her, the difference between the Sophie at the beginning and at the end - it was overwhelming.

I loved Ian so much. He has faults, but he is just human. He is an incredibly good person, so selfless and caring. I actually swooned at everything he did. What he's doing in Uganda, what they both did, it immediately redeemed them for every of their past sins in my eyes.

They start of rocky. At first, he's antagonizing her so much I felt like there's no way he was the hero of this story. But the chemistry between Ian and Sophie is undeniable, even then. She is acutely aware of him and everything about him, and we are subtly shown that he's not so unaffected by her either. I loved the way they slowly fall in love. There is nothing superficial about it. It was so profound, definitely beyond the good looks and the fact that they were forced to spend time together. They see each other for who they really are.
This book is devoid of sex scenes as all her other books I've read are.

In VAIN, she deals with a very heavy topic of the Lord's Resistance Army operating in Africa (I'm sure everyone's at least seen the Kony2012 documentary on Youtube, so you're probably familiar with it), mainly orphans in Uganda and she paints a vivid picture of what is going on over there. I won't lie, it got to me. She doesn't flinch from showing it all, the blood and gore, either. She sends a clear message - people need to wake up and stop being purposefully ignorant. What I like the most is that she isn't preachy at all.

She creates a colorful cast of amazing characters. She makes you feel without telling you what to feel. The dialogue and character interactions were natural. The conflict is believable. She writes a few thrilling scenes that have you gripping the edge of your seat. You feel like you're taking this journey of self-discovery right along with Sophie. You get to know Ian through and through, even though it's all from Sophie's POV. That's powerful writing right there.

Maybe it's because it's my most anticipated release, but it may be one of the best books I've read this year. I was worried that it wouldn't deliver. It did, though. It's so refreshingly different and it makes you feel. I definitely recommend it.

"Vanity's a debilitating affliction. You're so absorbed in yourself it's impossible to love anyone other than oneself, leaving you weak without realization of it. It's quite sad. You've no idea what your're missing either. You will never know real love and your life will pass you by."

BRILLIANT!!!This book touched me somewhere deep and I can't even begin how to explain it. My heart still feels like it's in a vice grip and barely beating as we speak. One of the best books I have EVER read!! This book takes you to Uganda Africa and makes you question your own life. Ian and Sophie's characters have so much depth. I found myself rooting for Sophie and the person she was becoming. And Ian is sweet, funny but there is so much MORE to him. Strong character development throughout. I loved every second, every moment of this book. This is definitely a must-read!!!!!! You will not be disappointed.

About the Author

Crystal G. Herman has been the Assistant Professor of Theatrical Costume Design at the University of Texas at El Paso since 2008. She received her MFA in Costume Design from The Ohio State University. She has designed costumes professionally for nationally recognized theatres such as the Utah Festival Opera Company and the Weston Playhouse in Vermont. Over the past twelve years Crystal has designed and constructed costumes for a variety of other theatres in the Southwest. Her research and teaching concentrate on costume design, costume rendering, costume history, millinery, and costume crafts.

An Excellent Study Bible

Although I'm not Catholic, this Catholic translation is my personal favorite translation. Protestant readers should be aware it contains the Apocrypha.

Clear and concise English accurately reflects the original languages. Excellent footnotes help the reader understand references that would otherwise be invisible to modern readers. In an effort to more accurately portray the meaning from the original language, some verses are split between other verses. These are clearly labeled, but some people find this disconcerting. This edition has been out of print for some time. It is hard to find a Jerusalem Bible with the full footnotes, and you want the footnotes. People sometimes portray to The New Jerusalem Bible as a new edition of The Jerusalem Bible, but truly, it is a new translation. My preference is for the older translation.

The Bible was advertised as "used-like new condition", which was entirely accurate.

I believe this may be the best English translation ever written

I believe this may be the best English translation ever written, First translated from the early texts into French, Then translated again directly from the early texts into English, while compared with the French. the result is unique colloquialisms, and phrasing shifts that bring the actual scenes into sudden surprising vividness. VERY well researched. N.T. Wright reviewed a list of 10 or 12 modern English translations and "damning with faint praise" would describe a lot of them. Of this, he said: "One of the best, VERY good overall, in places brilliant, occasionally misleading". I like that, but I'll decide for myself if it's misleading thank you. This standard version supplies a LOT! more cultural background material than the readers edition and is harder to find I LOVE it! Don't mistake it for the NEW Jerusalem Bible, which is timid, bone dry, wordy, (like this review) and boring.

Timeless - Traditional

As one who greatly dislikes the inclusive language of The New Jerusalem Bible, I have been searching for a "Like New" used copy of The Jerusalem Bible (�1966) for quite some time.
I recently found a copy here on Amazon that met my criteria.

In my excitement at the time I placed my order, I clearly hadn't read the description thoroughly, and was under the erroneous impression that I had ordered a standard hardcover/cloth edition.

Upon receiving my package I was utterly delighted to find a beautiful near-perfect, black, flexible leather-bound, Jerusalem Bible with completely clean copy (no notation marks, no highlights, etc.) ...and for just $19.96!!! What a treasure! What a blessing!
The leather binding was a bit dull and slightly dehydrated upon receipt (it IS fifty years old, after all!).
A few applications of a leather conditioning creme was all it took to restore suppleness and a lovely sheen (please see my photo).

The 1966 Standard edition Jerusalem Bible translation is my absolute favorite for its clarity, faithfulness to original sources, use of traditional language, and it's excellent footnotes (see photo), and study resources.
In particular, I very much like the individual book introductions.

The translation itself, for those unfamiliar with The Jerusalem Bible, reads similarly to the Revised Standard Version (RSV-2CE).
It is so much more scholarly in flavor than the "simplistic" New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE).

So while I own other newer beautiful leather-bound Bibles, this "used", half-century old treasure is now my "go-to" Bible.
I use it for my daily Lectio Divina. It's the one I carry to and from church. And it's the Bible that I use to teach from in my Adult Religiious Education classes and Bible Study groups.

I'm so thankful for this timeless treasure --quietly sitting on a shelf somewhere-- just awaiting my order.
Truly a blessing and one of my most-prized possessions.

Larry Schechter began playing fantasy baseball in 1992, experiencinggreat success over the ensuing two decades. Don't need to rely on "experts" anymore, Schechter teaches you how to do it yourself.

I enjoyed reading through Winning Fantasy Baseball, and will continue to reference back to it as I prepare for my drafts, and throughout the season. It is absolutely applicable to both hardcore fantasy players, and beginners. It is dry informational type reading and at times can get pretty nerdy with various player value formulas etc. What this book allowed me to do was learn how to create my own player rankings and values based off my specific league settings and roster construction. What this allows me to do is enter the draft with a rankings list and dollar values that are tailored to my league. I no longer have to print out the same player rankings that everybody else carries into the draft. Developing my own draft guides allows me to see where certain values can be found in a draft. And VALUES is the central theme to this book, and to winning your fantasy leagues.

It's what any decent fantasy player should be reading. Adapt or die.

I bought this book the first weekend it came out. I feel guilty for not writing a review sooner, but I was busy murdering people in small stakes online drafts. While it's a huge help in having a better draft day, the real joy from the book comes from having a new perspective from which to look at a draft. He explains how to take the total amount of money to be spent in an auction by all the teams combined, and allocate a portion of it to each player. Once you have the league laid out in front of you, with a clear idea of each player's value, a draft becomes a fun exercise in getting the most out of it. I used to leave a draft with a vague sense of whether it went well or not. I now leave it with clear rankings of all the teams involved. He applies his ideas to snake drafts and in-season changes, but my view of auction drafts was so drastically changed by this book that I'd have to say that's the centerpiece of the nice table he's set for the fantasy baseball fan. Not only is the information valuable, it's a fun read over a rainy day or two.

Lots of good advice but not enough to become Larry Schechter

It was a very illuminating book from a master of the game. He covers projections, values/rankings, and in-season management. The only issue I had with it is he doesn't really detail his projection system but rather seems to indicate he does it by intuition, some of the rules of thumb which he shares. Yet, apparently his projections are very accurate. If that's the case, then Larry really is just more talented than the rest of us and we have no chance against the likes of him. If, however, he used Sabermetric data like the rest of us likely would to create projections, then I'd have faith that I could be successful consistently.

For now, I'm using projections from various sources, averaging them out, and creating my own valuation system based on SGPs like Larry indicates. I will certainly use his advice on in-season management and keepers (we actually have a 2 keeper draft league that will redraft at the All-Star Break) and hope all that gained knowledge results in a fantasy win this year and for years to come.

About the Author
Rich and Robyn Wilkerson have been helping people who are in crisis since the 1970's. The Wilkersons and members of their church actively minister in hospitals, prisons, and high-crime areas. The results are amazing. When the couple came to Miami to minister as co-pastors of Trinity Church in the 1990's, the church consisted of about 250 people. Now attendance tops 4,000. The Wilkersons are also the founders of a large social service organization, the Peacemakers Family Center. Rich earned an MA in organizational leadership and is currently earning his doctorate at Southeastern University.

The Why and How of Servant Leadership

What qualities characterize extraordinary leaders, ones who make a decisive impact on the lives of their followers? Often, we turn to the rich, powerful, and famous to answer these questions, under the assumption that leadership requires prominence of that sort. But as Rich and Robyn Wilkerson point out in their new book, everyday people often make the most extraordinary leaders.

The Wilkersons copastor Trinity Church, a multicultural, Assemblies of God megachurch in Miami, Florida. They also cofounded the Peacemakers Family Center, an innovative, award-winning social service organization ministering to the urban poor. Inside Out is a book about “the why and how of servant leadership,” whose stories and principles are largely drawn from their work in pastoral ministry and social service.

In the book, the Wilkersons identity fifteen traits of servant leaders:

• Vision
• Values
• Faithfulness
• Acceptance
• Loyalty
• Humility
• Integrity
• Compassion
• Encouragement
• Generosity
• Respect
• Mentoring
• Flexibility
• Resilience
• Selflessness

The Wilkersons devote a chapter to each trait. The chapters include examples from the Wilkersons’ personal lives, testimonials from Trinity or Peacemakers members, a biblical reflection, and questions for discussion. Leaders can benefit from reading this book individually, of course, but I also think it can be used profitably with small groups and volunteer teams. A church imbued with these traits will no doubt have a thriving presence in its community.

This Book will give you both: "A-Ha, moments" and a few "Uh-oh moments!"

I have worked for leaders who have been featured in Forbes and Fortune. I have been privileged to know entrepreneurs who have changed the landscape of industries. Leaders who were able to come in and change the trajectory of a company. Most of those leaders also transformed themselves into individuals who thought the success of a company was solely attributable to them. They fell into the trap of thinking that they were the secret ingredient to the growth or success of their team. It's easy to do when you have people telling you how smart, successful and unique that you are as a leader.
When Jim Collins wrote "Good to Great" and introduced us to the "Level 5" leader he laid out an opportunity for someone to take us on a journey of what it takes to go from "Level 4 to Level 5." Inside Out answers the question of what keeps some at "Level 4" while others breakthrough to level 5? "Inside Out" answers that question for us and walks us through a humorous and often emotional journey that is the road map of achieving the leap from "4 to 5."
On a personal note, chapter 12 was an eye opener for me. I bought this book shortly after losing my mother. More than being my mom; she was my encourager. No one was a bigger fan and when I was at my worst, she never gave up. She was the "shoulder" for me that Robyn eloquently describes in her story of Elon and Graham (aka G-Money). I miss my mom everyday and if she was here I would tell her how much her encouragement meant to me.

An excellent book for pastors and church laity who are desiring to further develop themselves or their congregation into better leaders. The unique way that Pastors Rich and Robyn model leadership through serving is thoughtfully depicted and articulated in "Inside Out." The stories and corresponding leadership insights throughout the book are easy to grasp and apply to your life. This makes "Inside Out" a compelling, yet accessible read for everybody from the seasoned saint to the newest of Jesus followers. A "must have" resource for your life!
