The result is an indispensable source of information about one of history's greatest musical geniuses — a standard reference work as appealing to the general music lover as it is essential to the Beethoven scholar.

Beethoven as Schindler Knew Him

Schindler met Beethoven in 1814, when Beethoven was 44 and the author was an impressionable 19 year old. Schindler became an almost constant companion of the composer, and was witness to a number of fascinating occurrences that no other biographer, such as Ries, had access to. Schindler gives us examples of Beethoven's strongly emotional nature, in such a way that I felt I could have recognized the composer should I have passed by him on abusy street. Inclusion of this information is what made this biography most appealing to me. One of my favourite sections is an appendix entitled "Beethoven's Daily Routine" which describes, among other things, how Beethoven would count out 60 beans for his cup of coffee.
However, Schindler is not a transparent witness. Rather, he feels compelled to "protect" Beethoven from "his many enemies", for whom there is no historical basis. A sense of Schindler acting as guardian comes through strongly in the writing. The most striking example of this attitude is Schindler's description of the meeting between Beethoven and Rossini, a meeting which historically never took place!
Fortunately, this excellent Dover edition is thoroughly annotated - there are as many editor's notes as there are pages in the text! I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading a contemporary account of the life of the great composer, and who would enjoy witnessing the profound effect that he had on at least one of his associates.

Strange that the first reviewer says that the meeting between Beethoven and Rossini never took place. Rossini and Beethoven would have disagreed! They met in the spring of 1822 when Rossini was in Vienna for the premiere of his opera Zelmira. Rossini has left an account of the meeting

I have enjoyed this book very much. It written by someone that knew Beethoven ,and it offers you a lot of information about Beethoven's life, it is accurate. When there are two differents versions of the same event, the authors explains and describe them.

A very objective book and enjoyable.

Massoumeh Ebtekar
Masoumeh Ebtekar is an Iranian scientist and politician. Ebtekar first achieved fame as the spokeswoman of the students who had occupied the U.S. Embassy in 1979. Later she became the first female vice-president of Iran. She wrote an account of the embassy takeover with Fred A. Reed entitled Takeover in Tehran: The Inside Story of the 1979 U.S. Embassy Capture, which is available from Talonbooks.

International journalist and award-winning literary translator Fred A. Reed is also a respected specialist on politics and religion in the Middle East. After several years as a librarian and trade union activist at the Montreal Gazette, Reed began reporting from Islamic Iran in 1984, visiting the Islamic Republic thirty times since then. He has also reported extensively on Middle Eastern affairs for La Presse, CBC Radio-Canada and Le Devoir. Reed is a three-time winner of the Governor General’s Award for translation.

A view from the other side

I think it's important for readers to separate their own political beliefs when reading a book such as this one, because regardless of how you view the hostage takeover, this book presents what one side thought it was doing, a side we have not attempted to listen to and we can learn from. Ms. Ebtekar takes us inside the embassy compound in a fascinating account of the early days of this culminating moment in the revolution, and it's a view we as Americans need to at least check out. My own complaints with the book was that it seemed to lose some of the narrative thread as the description of the crisis wore on, and I would have also liked a bit more reflection on the part of the author given her current position in the Iranian government. Nevertheless, an important read for Americans and Iranians alike.

An Alternate History

Many American readers will dismiss this book as purely propaganda, but I found it enlightening and at times entertaining. In attempting to explain the reasons behind the takeover, and the many unexpected results we learn a lesson about history and events' ability to have a snowball effect. Furthermore, there is little finger pointing and chest pounding that you'd usually find in such a memoir. People who take the time to read this book will learn about a time in our history that's often conjured up in media conversation, but is far from understood. This book, as its author sets out to do, begins that process of piecing together the many stories and perspectives of those 444 days.

Timely, informative, interesting memoir

"Takeover" is a timely book even today, a primary source memoir rather more revealing than many histories. Several reviewers did not read the book or read from such virulently antagonistic positions that they learned nothing from a rich resource.

The 444 days counted down by the nightly news leave images from one side and support a narrow and emotional tale about terrorists, fanatics, and threat. Far from reality or balance. The retelling of the takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, the student's goals and activities, Khomeni's response, Press coverage and attitudes exemplifies something Americans have yet to come to terms with. The regular exposure of efforts at sabotage and CIA intervention were censored out of accounts we saw.(There is little or no account of the much older role of the US in Iran's finances and politics even before the First World War or even of the overthrow of Nationalist Mossadeq by CIA sabotage -- all of which provide a depth of experience and understanding of US motives and actions deeper than even today's typical understanding of Iran by Americans.) At a time when our extremists see nothing by an enemy in Iran we are likely to make similar miscalculations.

The biggest Power seems to have mostly sheltered, xenophobic, ill informed citizens because of both the media and our natural predisposition and distance. (As of 2004 we have new censorship that does not allow some books from specific 'enemy' countries to be published in the US - further corrupting our thinking and understanding.) "Takeover" is an easy and provocative read valuable for the personal story it tells and the much broader reflections about US policy, the CIA, the Media, and the near total "disconnect" from world realities from which we still suffer. It tells its story well and makes no pretense of being a broad and balanced history while injecting much that has been left out by American accounts.

A life-changer and priceless guide

Many dysfunctions in the body and nervous system can be related to abnormal and dysfunctional breathing. Conditions including anxiety, panic attacks, poor sleep patterns, fatigue, muscle cramps, exaggerated startle response, and brain fog can all be related to the way we breathe. Reshaping and retraining the way you breathe can improve functions of the brain and nervous system, improve blood health, reduce the "fight or flight" response in the body, and improve immune function. As a functional neurologist, I have found Dr. Belisa's BREATHE to be a priceless guide not only for my patients who suffer from these issues, but for those who search for greater alertness and invigoration.

Learning how to breathe again

This book was an interesting and quick read, it is well written and easy to follow. I took breathing for granted most of my life and quickly realized that I have been breathing incorrectly for years. Recently faced with a stressful job, I have recently been finding myself full of anxiety and sleepless. While I haven't tried the methods laid out in this book for the full 14 days yet, I have been practicing breathing daily and while at work. It has been helping to calm my my nervous system and clear my mind. Hoping with regular practice, Dr. Belisa's tips will help cure my insomnia. The idea that breathing is healing makes so much sense!

I would give this a 3.5 if I could. The book has good information, once you finally get through the interminable chapters selling the author's idea. The actual meat of the book, for which I was looking, could have been a pamphlet.

Rosemary Goode is smart, funny, and sassy, but no one seems to notice. All anyone sees is her weight - all 200 pounds of it. She doesn't fit in at school, she finds herself getting made fun of by the popular Bluebirds, and the only boyfriend she'll ever have is Mr. Hershey, or Mr. M&M.

At the start of a new year, Rosemary finds herself disappointed. Santa just brought her an unwanted treadmill for Christmas and her Aunt Mary gave her tickets to a "Healing the Fat Girl Within" Conference. On top of that, Rosemary's mother has sneakily set up counseling sessions for weight loss.

After a meltdown at her mother's gossipy salon, Rosemary decides she is going to lose the weight - on her terms. Rosemary tries various methods to lose weight, but it's a slow process. When Rosemary's mother is diagnosed with cancer, the distance between them grows even more and Rosemary tries to keep from turning back to food. Things start to look up when Kyle Cox, the school's newest football star, starts to take a notice in Rosemary. But how can popular, good-looking Kyle ever like a girl like Rosemary? And how will Rosemary bridge the ever-growing gap between her and her mother?

ARTICHOKE'S HEART is one of those books I wanted to stay in bed on a rainy day with and never stop reading. The cover and storyline may make you think this is light chick-lit, but the plot digs much deeper and carries a wide range of emotions that are great for any mood.

Rosemary is a fantastic character and her growth throughout the book is realistic. I was cheering her on the whole way through and felt as though I was on the journey with her. I also have to admit I had a bit of a crush on Kyle while reading this book! Author Suzanne Supplee put so much into her characters; they felt real and I didn't want to leave them. The Southern setting added an extra dose of charm to the story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

A Book Everyone Should Read!

Wow. I was so incredibly blown away by Artichoke's Heart. I only wish I'd picked it up sooner. The one thing that stopped me from doing so was the fact it was about a "fat" girl losing weight and generally, I shy away from those books. I rarely find them to be realistic and since I relate to this subject very closely, it just aggravates me. But Artichoke's Heart by Suzanne Supplee did anything but that.

Rosemary Goode is probably the most realistic character I've read about. Yes, she's "fat" to some people but she also has an incredible personality. The way she thinks and sees other people from a "fat girls" perspective is something you don't ever really hear about but is easily understood, especially when you've been through a similar experience. For those who can't relate to the way she thinks, Artichoke's Heart would definitely be an eye-opener.

The way Supplee handled the weight issue was amazing. People who are skinny seem to think that losing weight is simple as putting it on and that you can just decide you aren't going to be fat anymore. Yeah, sorry, but it doesn't happen like that. Supplee brings truth to what really goes on in a fat girl's mind.

The romance portion of the novel was also well-written. I just wish there were more boys like Kyle in the world.

Truthfully, I wish that I could force everyone to read this novel. It blew me away and I'm positive I'm not the only one. So, if you're going out to be a book this weekend, buy this one. You won't regret it!

Heartwarming Story of a Southern "Big Girl"

Rosemary is sweet, funny, and is always helping out at her mom's beauty salon in small town, Tennessee. She isn't happy with herself, though- she wants to drop some of her 190 pounds. When a regular customer and friend has a heart attack related to obesity, Rosemary starts getting drastic in her efforts.
Rosemary's life is filled with women - the only male character in the book is her love interest. Her family consists of her mom, aunt and grandmother. Despite this, the characters in this book are humorously realistic, and I thought this was a great book on self-image and battling weight loss, especially for young adults. I especially love the friendship between Rosie and Kay-Kay, one of the most beautiful girls at school.
