Physical properties and chemical durability are described in detail. The physical properties include density, strength, shrinkage, and elasticity. Chemical durability includes resistance to acids, chloride ingress, carbonation, and freeze-thaw resistance. Fire resistance is also included, which is seldom considered, but is a very important aspect of the safety of the structure.

Microstructure development and its relation to the durability properties of LWAC generally are not highlighted in the literature. The development of bonds, the microstructure with different binder systems, and different types of lightweight aggregates are explained. They show how lightweight aggregate concrete differs from normal weight concrete. The chapters on chloride ingress and freeze-thaw resistance are detailed because of the use of LWAC in offshore construction.

The economical aspects of using LWAC are also reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that although the cost of LWAC is high, the total cost of construction has to be considered, including the cost of transport, reinforcement, etc. When these are considered then LWAC becomes cheaper and attractive. The life cycle cost of the concrete is another consideration for calculating long-term savings on maintenance costs.

Valuable book for Materials Specialists

This is a comprehensive book that considers all aspects of lightweight aggregates and lightweight aggregate
concrete. The authors begin with a brief overview of the historical use of lightweight aggregate concrete, both naturally occurring and artificial, from ancient times to the present. This is followed by a summary of production facilities around the world, giving an indication of the amount of material produced per annum (although some of the figures are out of date). The various methods of manufacturing lightweight aggregates are covered in great detail; some processes are described in general terms while others are specifically related to particular products. The procedure for designing lightweight aggregate concrete mixes (both light-weight fines and with natural fines) is out-lined, although the actual proportions will obviously be a function of the specific materials used. Two chapters deal with the microstructure of lightweight aggregate concrete and the significant physical characteristics, such as shrinkage and creep. Subsequent chapters cover the important topics related to in-service behaviour of light-weight aggregate concrete. The first covers key areas of durability, such as alkali-aggregate reaction, carbonation, corrosion and chloride penetration. The authors deal extensively with these topics, giving data from both laboratory testing and field surveys. The information should help to dispel the common misconception that lightweight aggregate concrete is not as durable as `normal' concrete. A chapter is devoted to the important aspect of fire resistance, both of standard grades of concretes and high-strength/high-performance concretes. The final in-service behaviour topic considered is freeze-thaw resistance. The book concludes with a brief overview of applications of lightweight aggregate concrete in New Zealand, Scandinavia and the UK.
No mention is made of applications in North America, a curious omission in a book published in the USA. The main limitation of the book is that it concentrates on the properties of light-weight aggregates and of lightweight aggregate concrete. It pays little attention to the practicalities of the use of the material. Production, transportation, placing and finishing are covered in a very short chapter. Advantages and disadvantages are covered in only three pages, with a further three presenting a simplistic approach to the possible economies. In summary, this is a valuable book for materials specialists, but would probably be of little use to practicing engineers.

No Bears?

Ella is tired of bears. They are in too many stories. This is her story, so there won't be any bears... or will there?
Ella tells us she is going to tell us a story with no bears in it. Her story constantly tells us that there are no bears, and Ella chimes in occasionally to tell us when it's getting scary or tell us how perfect the book is.

I absolutely adored this book. From the very first page, I started reading it out loud. Ella is just so much fun and so easy to read. The pictures are colorful yet simple. It would be perfect to read to a kindergarten or first grade class. It is just too long to read aloud to a group of younger children, and that makes me sad. It would be a great book for one on one reading with a younger child, especially one that is good with sitting through longer books.

There were so many parts of this book that I loved. I could probably quote the whole thing, but that would defeat the purpose of reviewing it. With words like "fantastical" you know this book is a winner! In Ella's words, "Wow! This turned out to be a pretty good book, don't you think?" Yes Ella, I do!

Bears or no bears, brilliant illustrations

"Every time you read a book, it's just BEARS BEARS BEARS - horrible furry bears slurping honey in awful little caves." That's how fed up Ella is with bears hogging all the storybooks. She needs a break from all the bears. The obvious solution is to take matters into her own hands and create a storybook that has, you guessed it, no bears. No bears in her castle, no bears in her forest, no bears putting their grimy little paws in her book, period.

Instead of bears crowding up the joint, Ella's book has a tutorial for making your own paper crown, fairies with shimmering wings, a map of faraway places, and a terrible monster. This monster is also terribly (hilariously) dressed, replete in a pair of yellow and coral striped tights and an offbeat patterned mask. Ella's story has action, adventure, and like all good storybooks, a happy ending.

I like how Ella includes classic storybook elements in a seemingly random way. When she introduces the monster to the story, a little girl in a red cape and hood runs past with a basket while a wolf looks on. The monster crosses the river in a bathtub with an owl and a pussycat, later passing by a trio of pigs in one house, and a girl with a suspiciously long braid in another.

There may be no bears allowed in, but one lurks (unknown to the bear banning author) right at the edges of the book, with a paw reaching in on several pages. Could it be that a bear is having a huge effect on Ella's book on the sly?

Leila Rudge does a great job tempering all the colors and activity in Ella's book against the pure white background. There are so many little details to take note of, but it's not the least bit overwhelming. There is action and adventure on every page, paired with adorable little patterned clothing (Ella's pink patterned shirt is my favorite) and clever little jokes tucked in everywhere.

No Bears: A Picture Book Worth Looking at the Pictures

Summary: No Bears

Ella is writing a book, and she knows what sort of book it will be. Her book will have pretty things, fairies, princesses, castles, funny things, exciting things and scary things but most importantly NO BEARS. After all, "Every time you read a book, it's just BEARS BEARS BEARS - horrible furry bears slurping honey in awful little caves."

Then follows Ella's delightful story including, yes, a princess (Ella who has donned a paper crown for the part), a king and queen (who look rather domestic), a fairy godmother (with pen, paint, and a magic wand) and a "scary" monster but NO Bears. Princess Ella peers into the illustrations of her spiral bound notebook while behind all the action a furry bear watches on (although he nicely refrains from slurping any honey). When the monster decides to kidnap the princess, the bear steps into action attempting to stop the monster on each page. Finally, when all other attempts have failed and the monster has grabbed the princess. The bear uses a quick wave of the fairy godmother's wand to right all wrongs and return the princess to her safe home. Ella's story ends with a bash for the fairy godmother who everyone knows saved Ella (after all there are no bears!). The poor neglected bear is left with a few straggling fairy tale creatures and no verbal credit for a job well done.

Illustrations: No Bears

Leila Rudge's illustrations in No Bears add a complex dimension to the simple storyline. I caught my son peering over the illustrations on his own trying to see every detail. If you are a reader (like me) who gets so excited at the chance to read a new book that you race through it as quickly as possible, slow down and enjoy. This picture book is one of those rare treasures where the illustrations and words blend together in perfect story-harmony. (Note: Due to the importance and size of the illustrations, this book may not be a good choice for a read aloud story time for a larger group.)

My Comments: No Bears

Meg McKinlay and Leila Rudge's delightful book No Bears definitely meets my personal three major review criteria: well-written, quality illustrations, and encourages the imagination. My son and I enjoyed reading the book together multiple times. One caution, I did notice that even though Amazon has listed this book as for three and older, my almost four year-old did not understand the humor of the illustrations contrasted with the story until I explained it to him. (Of course, I enjoyed the cuddles and giggles while explaining!)

Best of all, No Bears, encourages creative storytelling and writing. Don't be surprised if your children want their own blank spiral notebooks for story writing after reading Ella's tale.

Short and Smutty….but in a good way.

There isn't a ton of set up or anything going into the story. Verity has been slighted by her ex-boyfriend very publicly on a website rate your shag. Embarrassed and completely self-conscious of all of the information her ex gave about being prudish and stiff Verity agrees to go to one of Cal’s parties that night.

Cal’s house parties are notorious for people having sex and Verity walks into watching a threesome almost immediately after coming to his home. I think this is about 4-5 pages in, like I said no time was wasted getting to the nitty-gritty and since this is only 74 pages long I guess it makes sense.

Cal is almost too good to be true. He is patient, understanding and has taken it as his personal mission to make sure Verity actually has an orgasm with another person in the room. As he helps her explore her own sexuality she becomes more comfortable and confident.

”Like I said, you think too much.”
“What else am I supposed to do?”
“He leans closer, tucks my hair behind my ear. “You’re supposed to walk into the restaurant with me. You’re supposed to order the most expensive thing on the menu, then order desert and refuse to share it. You’re supposed to torture me with boring conversation about the weather, the news, the latest book you read, knowing that I’m sat opposite you, thinking about your lovely tight ____ and how much I want to shove my ____ in it.”

Cal was charming and completely likable and I enjoyed the way he played with Verity. The only down side to this story was Verity herself. She sabotages herself all the time and even though I felt sorry for her I really had a little bit of a hard time liking her since she was so down on herself. But…that was the premise of the story so it fit this plot well

There are a few F/F/M scenes so if that isn't your thing be aware. They weren't too graphic but it happened. This is also an English story so the dialogue took a little getting used to. But if you want something short and smutty with a HEA of sorts this may be what you are looking for.

A Hot and Sexy Novella Read.

Short and Erotic-novella style read
Verity finds out her ex-boyfriend ousted her inadequacies on a website. He rated her so low, that he and his friends have been making fun of her to her face without her understanding that is what they have been doing. Verity found out and it hurt her tremendously. Cal, her boss happened to come into her office when she found out and invited her to one of his famous house parties –Verity accepted. Verity is this shy woman who doesn't watch porn, doesn't use sex toys, and who has never had an orgasm. Cal tries to change all that.

Cal is one sexy boss. He is smart, accomplished and has nursed a secret crush on Verity for a while but knowing she had a boyfriend, didn’t pursue. At the party, Verity comes across a sex scene that Cal watched with her. Then they started engaging in some crazy sexual chemistry and the story took a 180 turn. It really ended up being a sweet, yet really erotic, sexy , hot story. I liked Verity –her growth in the story was wonderful. I liked Cal- I think he grew too, from the guy who thew sex parties to at the end , a man who found what he was missing.

The Pleasure Principle

I received this book via Netgalley for an honest review.

This novella is very hot and if you’re looking for a story based on the sexual discovery of the main character, then this one could be a good read. It barely took me two hours to finish it (in between tidying my place and talking on the phone for a little while). I think it’s a good alternative when you don’t have much time to read and you want something shamelessly sexual. ;)

So, you have a main character from which POV the story is told. She’s a woman in her twenties, dumped by an a**hole who went out of his way to ridicule her online. She’s very emotional, doesn’t believe in her abilities to satisfy men in bed so she agrees to go to a very special party at one of her boss’s place.

Seems pretty common, right? Well, I can’t exactly say that it’s a unique novella or story, but it’s still working.

Cal and Verity are an interesting pair. I think it’s fun that the author doesn’t show us that it only takes one try for the male character to make the female forget everything about her issues, her hangups and her fears. It made it more believable and I enjoyed Cal’s determination.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there isn’t that much depth in this novella. You have a fairly good characterization considering the short length of this story, you have a plot that is working but isn’t overly complex and you have a writing style that isn’t stilted. It flows and I think I was in the mood for something light and not so difficult.

But, I must confess that there are a few peaks in both main characters’ psyche that let me believe that if the author would have wanted, she could have written a full length novel with some depth. Maybe even a more twisted plot. I’m pretty sure that I would have been onboard. :)

The ending is a little rushed maybe, and the characters’ feelings become too important too suddenly. At least, I didn’t have the opportunity to witness the build up. I saw the lust, the sexual chemistry between them, even a semblance of care, but actual feelings…not really.

I don’t regret reading this novella and I repeat: if you want an erotica novella, maybe you should give this one a chance.

I Needed This Book 30 Years Ago

Creating successful advertising is no longer about making up cute slogans, clever puns and wacky ideas. Or hiring celebrities (whom you'd like to meet). It's about strategic thinking. That's why this book is so important for any copywriter, art director or planner. Great creative people are intuitive strategists. But it doesn't hurt to have a manual. This book is it. I wish I'd had it 30 years ago.

What I really like about this book:

- Layman's terms. Alice does not sound like one of those ad execs that will pound you with one media term after another, she all boils it down to simple and digestible recommendations.
- Examples are current and on trend, not 40 to 50 year ago ads that you might not have experienced (or seen) yourself.
- Great guide to mastering how to crack the brief and making one.

What I don't like about this book:
- The cover title's typography.. is that the Kellogg's K? Hmm, clever.. but I wish it looked classier.

At first I was sceptical. I thought I wasted my money on a book that covers the creative brief and what it is. Now it does go threw the steps that we all know but it really goes deeper than that. It helps you understand what separates a good creative brief from a lousy one and gives examples. I definitely would recommend it to professionals and students.

This looks like a great book

This looks like a great book, but the supporting Web site isn't working. I hope that they get it sorted out soon.

Update
Their download site doesn't like FireFox I have been able to download the files with Microsoft Edge browser. I think they need to make their site more compatible.

About the Author

M. R. D. Foot, CBE, is an historian and former wartime intelligence officer. He was Professor of Modern History at Manchester University (1967-73) and has been involved with a number of works, including writing many books on the SOE and editing the first four volumes of the Gladstone Diaries. He was also Consultant Editor of The Oxford Companion to World War II (1995, paperback edition 2001).

A Peek into the Pot

"Secret Lives: Lifting the Lid on the Worlds of Secret Intelligence" comprises a series of selected signed articles by different authors from the British Dictionary of National Biography. Following rubrics of family, education, public life, private life, each entry relates the life of one of 90 (mostly) men who participated in the "world of secret intelligence." The only requirements governing the book are that all the subjects must be both British and dead; furthermore, the style of the book must be "business like." Thus one finds none of the wild speculation, sensationalism, or tedious moralizing that mars some current books on espionage. The sober attitude of the articles, however, by no means renders them dull. Each entry presents fascinating background details of the lives of those who spied either for or against their country--in some cases, both.

The biographies, ranging from the 15th through the 20th centuries, are written either by historians or those, including professional intelligence officers, who were acquainted with the subjects of the biographies. Despite the evenhandedness of the narratives, one must remember that they may be limited by the dictates of official secrets as well as the perspective of each author, which may or may not be objective (e.g., One might wonder whether, in the interests of history, the account of Roger Hollis ought to have been written by an historian who was not connected so closely to the official investigation of Hollis as was Dick Goldsmith White, who bases his narrative on both "private information" and "personal knowledge."). The reader is also left to wonder about the identity of the one anonymous author in the book, who pens a lucid and informative account of the life of Sir Stewart Graham Menzies (C of SIS during WW II). Just one of the book's little mysteries to intrigue the reader!

Understandably, "Secret Lives" is selective, but one wonders why certain people have been included and others left out. For example, why, since it covers such 16th-17th-century spies as Anthony Babington and Guy Fawkes, does the book omit Sir Francis Walsingham (spymaster of Elizabeth I)? Why, for that matter, does it omit novelist Aphra Behn (who spied on the Dutch for Charles II)? As for the twentieth century, why omit Felix Cowgill and Valentine Vivian of SIS, or Guy Liddell and Peter Wright of MI5? All played major roles in intelligence during World War II or the Cold War (One assumes [and hopes] that SIS agents Graham Greene and Malcolm Muggeridge appear in the national biographical series on Authors, and that Hugh Trevor-Roper appears among Historians.).

Included among the twentieth-century spies are novelist Somerset Maugham, Lawrence of Arabia, Robin Bruce Lockhart (of "Reilly, Ace of Spies" fame), Claude Dansey (SIS), Colin Gubbins (SOE), Roger Hollis (Director, MI5), Alan Turing (mathematician/cryptographer without whom the Enigma code would not have been cracked); and art historian Anthony Blunt; BBC radio presenter Guy Burgess; journalist and intelligence officer Harold Adrian Russell Philby; and diplomat Donald Maclean (the last four, Soviet penetration agents in British Intelligence).

Even though the subtitle of the book, "Lifting the Lid on Worlds of Secret Intelligence," constitutes outrageous hyperbole, "Secret Lives," which euphemizes or glosses over various documented imperfections or improprieties among the subjects of its investigations, nevertheless contains a wealth of intelligence, even if it grants the reader only a glimpse into the lives of the shadowy figures who moved behind the scenes in the continuing drama of world history.
