This novel scared me like no other in recent history of reading edgy books. In light of what happened to those three women we read about recently, who were held in captivity for many years, bad things can happen to good people in real life as well. I like the main character, Lucinda, who becomes an intrepid survivor despite the damaging event in her former life

Not to be missed; Chan creates despicable characters, but also characters who find the courage, somewhere within, to face evil and to survive. Chan had me on page one.

A psychologically penetrating thriller with a heart and a sense of
humor, Lying in Wait is the best book I've read in quite some time.
Damaged by unspeakable sexual abuse, Lucinda McConnell has constructed a
life for herself based on the avoidance of other people. Penn Stone, a
sadistic genius, who creates lurid tabloid headlines by luring his
former lovers to their deaths, has chosen her as his next victim. But he
underestimates Lucinda's inner strength and ability to engineer a turn
of events that even he could not have imagined.

About the Author
Janet Peacock is a medical statistician with over 20 years experience of medical and healthcare research, and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. She has conducted and collaborated in many published medical research studies, and gives advice to researchers at all the different stages of the research process. She has much experience in reviewing proposals and research articles, and has taught a range of trainee and career healthcare professionals, including medical students, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nurses. Through these experiences she has sought ways to promote sound methodology in conducting and reporting research findings by teaching, consultancy, and writing. For many years Janet worked at St George's University of London and left in 2004 to take up a chair at Brunel University. Sally Kerry has worked as a primary care statistician at St George's University of London for over 18 years. She has collaborated on many research projects, both in the UK and in Africa. Excellent introduction

If you are looking for a quick "transformation" read this book. This is a nicely written, concise and practical book. There are some technical description about the use of statistical software (STATA and SPSS). For those not interested, they can skip the technical sections but reviewing these pages (typically written in boxes) will make you understand better the way these programs function particularly reading the output page. I kind of believe this is the best reference for those who are seriously planning to write research papers.

Good Start for Publishing

This is a very useful textbook. Buyers should note that this is not a "how-to" statistics manual but a guide to presenting statistics (as per the title). I have found this book very useful in preparing papers for publication. I would strongly recommend this book for grad students and experienced researchers alike in the medical/public health sciences.

Eric Garnier is a researcher in plant functional ecology. His work on plant functional diversity is based on a combination of conceptual, experimental and methodological approaches, and contributes to the broad field of trait-based comparative ecology. He has pioneered some of the developments of conceptual models of relationships between plant functional traits, plant function, and biogeochemistry, and has participated in the development of standardized approaches to the measurement of plant traits towards a worldwide application. More recently, he has contributed to the emergence of ecoinformatics at the French national scale, especially through his work as the Director of CEntre for the Synthesis and Analysis of Biodiversity.

Marie-Laure Navas works on the identification of the functional diversity of plant species. More precisely, her work focuses on i) the identification of assembly rules of plant communities due to biotic and abiotic processes; ii) the characterization of changes in functional structure of plant communities along environmental gradients; iii) the identification of traits related to competition and facilitation ability of plants. These questions are addressed with the example of managed grasslands, especially in the French Mediterranean area. Recently, Marie-Laure Navas also developed collaborations with researchers in crop science and weed science, in order to test the relevance of the functional approach for developing new cropping systems based on more ecological-directed regulation of pests.

Karl Grigulis works as a research engineer in the Laboratoire d'Ecologie Alpine in Grenoble, France. Initially working as an agronomist in south-east Australia on topics of population ecology using pasture weeds as model systems, more recently in France he participates in projects focussed on functional and community ecology, in particular the field assessment of community functional structure as a determinant of ecosystem services.

David Adjaye, World-wide known Architect continues to Amaze

My daughter, Karen, a Stanford & MIT grad, who is a Board certified Artichect temporarily located in Abu Dhabi, was sent this work as a Xmas gift!!
A "New Yorker" last fall had an in-depth story on David Adjaye, who is doing the Afro-American Musuem on the Mall in D.C. Karen is doing some teaching & had directed her students to this gent.
