Too Many Typos

Overall a good introduction to the Unix Operating System, but the typographical errors are unforgiveable. The command line orientation of Unix is cumbersome enough without mistyped examples. Potentially frustrating for first time users, this book is in dire need of revision.

An otherwise concise introduction that is offset by an large number of careless editing errors.The novice UNIX user should be aware that a number of the text's practise examples contain sytax errors and omissions which will prevent the programs from running properly--it will exasperate you until you figure out the errors. THIS TEXT BOOK NEEDS A THOROUGH SCRUBBING BEFORE IT CAN BE CONSIDERED A LEGITIMATE COLLEGE TEXT BOOK

It was very hard for a beginer to understand.

I read it for a Unix class in college and I thought not only was the book not put in a format that beginers would not be easily able to grasp, but there were alot of mistakes and editing errors. Some of the examples were wrong (for the ones that had examples)and some of the numbered lists were put in the wrong order. Also it jumps around alot. I think they could have put it together better. Such as the vi editor and the file management. Why not put the chapters that pertain to vi together and the same for file management. There was a small paragraph on file management at the end of a command chapter.

Bite sized awesomeness.

This is not your typical business book. I used to read a lot of business books. But after a while I got tired of them. Most of them say basically the same things, use most of the same worn out statements (using different "clever" analogies) frequently use the same examples, but rarely give you actionable advice. And every business book is 100-200 pages too long. The only reason business books are as long as they are is because that's the length publishers can charge the most money for. It has nothing to do with the value of the content inside.

Justin's books are short and packed with value. You can read Human Bacon in a few hours, yet spend days or weeks working through the assessments and guides in the book.

I enjoyed Justin's first book, Oatmeal vs Bacon, but this second book demonstrates a business author and speaker coming into his own. If you're a Gen X guy, you need to read this book. If you know a Gen X guy, you should buy this book for them. Even if you're not a guy, or part of Gen X, but needing a personal branding refresh, this is an excellent read.

Another great book of insights

Justin has done it again. He disrupted our thinking about branding in "Oatmeal vs Bacon: How to Differentiate Yourself in a Generic World". Now he is giving humorous and valuable insights to men about how to be awesome in the workplace. You won't be able to read this without laughing as well as making notes about things to change (including your wardrobe!) Great job!

It all starts with the title

Justin Foster rightly asks "If we aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, then why do they have covers?". There is a lot of talk about persona branding out there and lots of advice - good, bad, and meh. Foster uses a conversational style to lay out the basics of what personal branding is about.

It doesn't matter who you are or what life stage you are in (though Foster recommends this particularly for Gen-X men), you will find accessible and practical advice in Human Bacon. And you will find that a little attention on the "cover" as well as the guts is well worth the investment in your brand.

After setting the stage of what a personal brand is and what are the things that traditionally stand in your way, Foster outlines key determinants of your personal brand in Talent, Style, Communication, Authenticity, Influence, Technology, and Youthfulness. He strips away some of the nonsense behaviors and thinking in each of these areas to get at the core of what each of these is about.

And make no mistake, if you want to ride your talent, that's great - but recognize you are missing the boat in the other areas. If you aren't sure what that means, you really need to pick up this book. Lay off the video games for about an hour and get through this book. And take advantage of the calls to action Foster includes in the book - they will help you bring to life personal branding concepts in a very tangible and sustainable way.

For example, why is China said not to have a history of corporate law, as a way of explaining its “failure” to develop capitalism on its own? Ruskola shows how a European tradition of philosophical prejudices about Chinese law developed into a distinctively American ideology of empire, influential to this day.

The first Sino-U.S. treaty in 1844 authorized the extraterritorial application of American law in a putatively lawless China. A kind of legal imperialism, this practice long predated U.S. territorial colonialism after the Spanish-American War in 1898, and found its fullest expression in an American district court’s jurisdiction over the “District of China.” With urgent contemporary implications, legal Orientalism lives on in the enduring damage wrought on the U.S. Constitution by late nineteenth-century anti-Chinese immigration laws, and in the self-Orientalizing reforms of Chinese law today. In the global politics of trade and human rights, legal Orientalism continues to shape modern subjectivities, institutions, and geopolitics in powerful and unacknowledged ways.

Not really a Kindle Book

I think of myself as an technology savvy individual, so when my computer science class had this book I bought it in the Kindle edition. It was still $165.00 which seemed very steep, but I enjoy reading on my iPad via the Kindle app, so thought his would be a good fit.

However it really should be described as a PDF of the textbook, not a Kindle ebook. The text size cannot be changed, since it is essentially just a picture of the page. That means that on a retina iPad it is still difficult to read the page without zooming in, and eye strain and frustration sets in quickly.

The only positive has been that you can search the text, however even that works fairly slowly due to the size of the file.

I would recommend you buy the paper version of the book until this publisher figures out how to implement an e-textbook correctly. Or make it a heck of a lot cheaper in the Kindle version.

Avoid this book if possible

This book has a lot of issues and wasn't really helpful to me throughout the duration of my class. The authors style of writing isn't interesting to read so it's difficult to retain the information. I'd find myself losing interest while mid-paragraph, start thinking about something else, only to realize I'd finished 2-3 paragraphs and had no memory of anything I'd read. The authors are also overly wordy and use a lot of jargon words. They could easily cut out about half the content from each chapter and still retain the important information. As proof of this, I'll reference chapter 4. I was reading through it and about half way through I read something that I was certain I'd read before. I flipped back to the introduction for chapter 4 on Page 121 and sure enough, they literally copy and pasted a paragraph from the introduction and put it in, nearly word for word, on page 137 of the same chapter. They even placed it in the middle of a paragraph and changed a word here or there to make it look like it is different information. The 2nd paragraph on the intro page starts out "So how common is online behavioral tracking?" whereas the one on page 137 starts out "So how common is web tracking?" Everything after that is copy and pasted. I have no idea how an editor didn't catch this. My guess is that changing the placement of the paragraph was one of the "changes" they made to get people to buy a new edition of the book, but they forgot to delete the spot where it was originally at. This excessive wordiness leads into problem number 2.

It takes way to long to get through each chapter. The sweet spot for textbooks is about 25-45 minutes a chapter. This makes it easier for the reader to stay engaged, retain the information they've read, and prevents some of the "how much longer is this chapter going to be" issues. Good luck getting through any of the chapters in this book in under an hour. There are 14 chapters and 540+ pages contained within those 14 chapters. This means that each chapter is roughly 30 pages (not counting the post chapter material). I'd say the average reader will spend anywhere between an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half getting through a chapter. You could probably drop that time a little by skipping the interactive session readings, but they are one of the few interesting spots in the book.

The first few chapters are also very disjointed, bouncing from random topic to random topic. There is some good information in this book, but unless you absolutely have to have it for a class, don't get it.

This book was required, and for that it was perfect.

The content is outdated. Not helpful for an IT class where the industry changes so quickly. Most content and case studies are from 2009, and forecasts to 2012 are frequently mentioned.

It's a bad sign if this book is the basis of your class.

Let's see Property Brothers try to remodel THIS one!

Ian Webster, a local artist, has just purchased a new home for him, his wife Holly, and their young son Jacob. It seems perfect, with enough room, a good location, and, surprisingly enough, a cheap selling price. After they move in, however, Ian realizes that the house is more than he expected. He starts to notice strange things in the house, like his reflection moving when he doesn't, and unseen voices speaking to his son. The truth is, the house has a dark secret, and one which will endanger not only those Ian knows, but even his own life.

The plot of "Bad House" is similar to Stephen King's book "The Shining" in that a building has an affect on an otherwise normal father, transforming him from the outside in. Ian's personality and character progressively declines as the book continues: he starts hating his family, he starts lusting after other women, and he starts to become more and more prone to violence. Sam West does an excellent job with the pacing in this regard: you can actually see how Ian gets worse and worse; at first hating what he's becoming, but then growing to love and embrace it. The backstory of the house itself is also explained well - I won't give it away, but by the end, everything comes together in a great payoff.

Though Sam West is sort of known as a gore and shock author, and there are some queasy moments in this book, it actually relies on psychological rather than violent horror. On this point as well, Sam West does an excellent job. There were plenty of moments that come across as freaky, and the book plays with your head as much as Ian's. By the final chapter, you'll be questioning ANYTHING going on, and wondering if ANYTHING is as it seems.

I sort of purchased this on a whim, but I didn't regret it. Though I didn't expect to read this all in one night, I did so anyway, simply because of how entranced I became by the story and events. I highly suggest this!

Bad House, reminds me of Stephen King's The Shining ...

Sam West's latest release, Bad House, reminds me of Stephen King's The Shining (without all the unnecessary 'padding') with aspects of The Amityville Horror thrown in.

Far from the usual splatterpunk, extreme horror we have come to expect from West, this is his attempt at a supernatural, haunted house tale. We still have all the shocks and gore in copious amounts but there is a definite build up of tension which culminates in a fantastic ending. Very intense reading and perhaps leave the light on for this one. ;)

Grueling, Demented, and Horrific are a few of the words I would use to describe this story…I loved it!
Have you ever wondered what makes a house bad? Is it the people who live there? Is it the ground it was built on? Or maybe evil decided that particular house was the one that it would life in, no one really knows. But when a house goes bad you may want to follow your gut instinct. You know, the instinct that tells you to stay the hell away from it. Ian Webster ignored this instinct, his family, Holly and Jacob, along with himself will pay the price for that subtle overlook. He keeps his eyes closed too long, keeps telling himself it’s not real, letting the house own his very soul—nothing good can come from that… Right?
Monstrous imagination and wonderful writing brings this vilely wicked and disturbing story to life. I’ll bet you trust your instincts after you read this one.

Excellent guide for a practical, personal spirituality

This easy-to-read book provides sound, practical guidance for the development of a personal practice of spirituality. Dr. Mulholland recognizes the individual ways each of us approaches God, and he encourages us to develop these methods to their fullest measure. He also challenges us to explore spiritual disciplines with which we are less comfortable as a way to add depth to our relationships with God. His discussion on the nature of prayer weaves its way throughout the book and provides the foundation upon which spiritual disciplines are built. This book will prove useful to spiritual leaders who wish to introduce spiritual disciplines to others, as well as to individuals who want to explore ways to practice spiritual disciplines in everyday life.

Hard for a left-brained reader to enjoy.

I feel a little gruff in only giving this book three stars, but that is largely due to the fact that if someone were to ask me what the book was about, I would scratch my head and be able to say little more than, "Spiritual Formation" and hope that the other person knew what that was. Mulholland's book was well written enough, but I found that the book did not hold my attention very well, even amidst a quiet environment. I re-read page after pager trying to glean something that would stick with me after I set the book down.

These "sticking points" were few and far between. However, some of its more salient features included the idea that Christians are not converted in one, fell swoop going from zero to 60 in nothing flat, but that they undergo multiple conversions as God increases in their lives (and as they seek to let him do so).

I liked Mulholland's urging contemporary Christians to try and measure themselves as God sees them (both better and worse) and not by what spiritual disciplines THEY are doing. I also appreciated his insights on how to read for "formation" (not just for information) and every Christian's need for a community of believers. Many of us neglect these important aspects.

What hit closest to home for me was just a few, brief sections on doubt and the mystery we encounter with God. Mulholland says that, "If there is no mystery, there is no room for God, because God is the ultimate mystery" (P. 148). I appreciate this honesty in a sea of Christians who would otherwise have us believe that they have it all figured out.

In a related section labeled "The Dark Night of the Senses," he paints an authentic picture of what every believer will eventually encounter: "Not a cloudless summer sky, but a spring morning after a night of violent storms; there are still dark clouds in the sky, downed trees and the occasional live-wire" (paraphrased). At those moments in life when we can no longer sense God's presence we usually doubt our faith or relationship with him, but Mulholland says that this is to place God in a box and relegate his role to one of simply maintaining a feedback loop for his followers. He stresses many times that Christians must give God free reign to be who he is and do what he will do, especially when it doesn't match their expectations and when they are confused or frustrated by him. That kind of wisdom is priceless.

Overall, this book has a few key points that I found quite helpful and insightful. I was mildly disappointed that I had to search so heavily for them among so much other chaff, yet I know that I tend to be a very linear thinker and most spiritual formation books don't fall into that category. I think the whole book could be read in about 3 hours, but it took me close to 5 due to the need for re-reading and lack of registering in my mind. If you know that you track well with this kind of reading then I would alter my rating to 4 stars. There are far worse books on spiritual formation out there, after all.

Insightful, Practical, Helpful

This book was a wonderful surprise to me when I picked it up. It was given to me as a textbook for a class I was teaching, and I honestly began to read it without any particular expectation. It has turned out to be one of the more practically helpful and insightful books on spiritual formation I have read. It is well organized, and very accessible.

Two strengths in particular stand out to me. First is the author's definition of spiritual formation: "Spiritual formation is a process of being conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others" (pg. 12). The "for the sake of others" provides a kind of focal point for much of what the book has to say about being conformed. Second is Mulholland's emphasis on the need for believers to be conformed in areas of their lives where they are most unlike Christ. Once that is said, it seems obvious enough: it just isn't said all that often.

If you are looking for good books on spiritual formation, I recommend this one highly.
