Having Tea and Toast with the Control Freak

Courtney Milan's "Things to Do" list is probably more interesting and better written than most romance novels on the market.

This book involves a believable really Big Misunderstanding--one of the few I've ever read that didn't make me even consider rolling my eyes. While sorting through the knotted strands of that problem, the heroine finds herself working in the ultra-claustrophobic country home of a well-described control freak.

A large part of the enjoyment of romance novels involves going through the process of walking down the bumpy road to the happily-ever-after and seeing good people rewarded and bad ones brought to justice (so much more satisfying than killing them off). This book pays off extemely well in that department.

Another joy to watch--Courtney Milan characters always change, grow and mature during her tales. Her stories are an illustration of the saying "That which does not kill you makes you stronger."

The title and cover puzzled me, however. What exactly did happen at midnight? There were many secret meetings about 10 p.m., but I don't remember midnight figuring into the story. And the pink gown on the cover? The heroine is limited to two well-worn dresses. At one point in the book, she laments the loss of a blue dress and at the end she has a new blue dress, but the pink ballgown is an odd representation of the story. The combination of title and cover conjure up images of Cinderella and a ball--and many romance novel cliches rather than this unique and enjoyable book.

3 Stars are Just About Right

Courtney Milan is one of my favorite authors, so maybe I was simply expecting too much. Most of her books strike just the right chord with me - lovely, dreamy romances with characters so well done they seem real. Maybe I should skip all novellas, because I really don't like them. Their length leaves me unsatisfied, usually wanting more. But, Courtney Milan is an unusual exception to my general rule and I bought this without hesitation. I think her 'Governess Affair' novella was a masterpiece of romantic reads, and 'Duchess Wars' the perfect sequel.

So, while this short story was as well-written as only she can do, I can't say I loved it. I think the setting and circumstances of the heroine, which others have described, made me too nervous to allow me to enjoy the book. My mind kept assuring me there would be a happy ending (there was), but my heart just wasn't invested in the romance. It's worth reading, so don't let me discourage anyone from ordering, but keep your expectations to around 3 or 3.5 stars and you won't be disappointed.

What Happened at Midnight~

This was a wonderful romance about a love thought gone. Mary Chartley is forced to take a position as a lady's companion after her fathers death and subsequent revelations about his embezzlement. To make matters worse, her fiance, John, is one of the men he stole from. Devastated, she returns his ring and flees saying she has no idea where the money went. When John should suddenly show up at a neighboring estate of her new position, she is sure he is there to turn her in. But John sees how subdued Mary has become, he is determined to find out what happened once and for all. As they find scant time together, as Mary is being 'protected' by her employer and has no time for herself, they slowly find their way back to each other and a very satisfying conclusion to the embezzlement dilemma. Courtney Milan is one of my favorite authors and she has yet again crafted a romance that is beautiful and deep with an eye for detail that I enjoy. I may have learned a bit more about drainage systems than I would have liked but it sets the tone for the period very well. 4 1/2 stars

I bought this book hoping to learn something new and advanced but found myself redaing things that are simple to impliment in excel.
There examples are on a very basic level , the templates that are supplied are for understandning the basics and no more then that.

Over all, I was very dissapointed. This book is for for beginers in excel who want to upgrade their thinking and planning to beginner plus level.

An important and pathbreaking book

This is an important book. which opens a path for some major rethinking of energy and comfort in buildings, and for significant new architecture. And it does so with striking visual presentation and telling metaphors. The standard paradigm for thermal comfort in a building--heating, cooling and circulating air--has been largely unquestioned for two generations or more. Kiel Moe shows the potential for a strikingly different approach, thermally active surfaces, based on recent pathbreaking European engineering (but also on neglected practices from ancient Rome and Korea). The book does an excellent job of bringing forward finished European and North American buildings which embody this approach, together with imaginative comparative diagrams which show their departures from mid-Twentieth Century practices but also their alignment with good older industrial-era buildings. Building this way may allow major steps forward in saving energy and using sustainable materials. The book also does quite a reasonable job of translating engineering technicalities into lay terms. Some will resist its message, because it asks practitioners and rule-of-thumb people to take a great deal of new thinking on board. But Moe has brought together the technical aspects, the core metaphors, and the actually built examples of the new approach in a way that is inspiring. The substance is here, as well as the excitement, and the book deserves close attention.

Good read

Clearly written, easier to understand than most programming books required for my programming classes at university. The book is not designed to teach you a "modern programming language", it is designed to teach you the concepts and principles of the "modern programming languages". Using three languages with the core basic solid concepts (although not the latest and greatest, fanciest, newest languages) is the right idea. My teacher is skipping the Java (13, 15, 17) and the Prolog (19, 20, 22) chapters. All of us in the class have taken C++ and most have taken Java. He is requiring us to learn "D" as well as "Go".

Over all I like the book and find the teaching style much more productive (and readable) than most textbooks on theory, practice and/or programming thus far.

This is a great book for an introduction to programming languages. It offers a very practical guide to learning a few different types of languages and understanding the syntax behind them. Some of the languages it teachings are questionable, however.

Good for an undergraduate programming languages course

I used this book teaching a course in programming languages structures at a small, liberal arts college in the northwestern USA (located not far from the publisher). I have generally been quite pleased with the text and plan to use it again.

PROS:

- Just the right level of detail. There is enough here to let students do a few things in each of the three major languages covered, without overburdening them.

- Very clearly written, in a friendly style. Alternating between "practical" and "theoretical" chapters was a good decision. As a minor point, there are surprisingly few typographical errors.

- Relatively inexpensive, as these things go.

CONS:

- Could use more exercises, but that's true of almost all textbooks.

- Some students argue that the title is a misnomer. Two of the languages covered in depth (ML and Prolog) are nearly 40 years old and not widely used or well supported. Perhaps Scheme would be a better choice for a functional language.
